Summertime Madness – Scorching Heat and Daring Tourists

Whew! We are making our way through another long, hot summer. This year in Italy, the heat was particularly intense, from Bologna to Bolzano, Florence to Venice and Verona, all the way to Rome! Crazy tourists have even been diving into fountains to cool off. But be warned—it’s considered very bad form! So as tempting as it may be to plunge into the Trevi Fountain… folks, restrain yourselves! Leave a good impression!

I giorni più caldi dell’estate: La Canicola
The Hottest Days of Summer: La Canicola

In English, we call the hottest stretch of the year the Dog Days of Summer. They’re the hazy, sweltering weeks of relentless sunshine, afternoon thunderstorms, and air so thick it seems to shimmer.

The phrase may even remind you of the famous scene in To Kill a Mockingbird, when Atticus Finch calmly faces a rabid dog staggering down the deserted street on a blazing summer afternoon. The image is unforgettable. But what do dogs have to do with the hottest days of the year?

A prima vista sembra altrettanto misteriosa.

Italians have a similar expression: la canicola. At first glance, it seems just as puzzling. Why should dogs become the symbol of oppressive summer heat?

To find the answer, we have to travel back nearly two thousand years and look up at the night sky.

Sirio: La stella più brillante e calda dell’estate
Sirius: The Brightest and Hottest Star of Summer

The ancient Romans called this period diēs caniculārēs, literally “the Days of the Little Dog.” They believed these scorching weeks began when Sirius, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (the Great Dog), rose alongside the sun. To them, Sirius wasn’t just another star. Its brilliant light seemed to add its own fiery heat to the sun’s, making the already scorching days of summer even hotter.

Today, we know the real reason for the summer heat has nothing to do with Sirius. But the ancient explanation left us with a wonderfully poetic expression that has survived for centuries, in both Italian and English.

La scienza misura il cielo. Le leggende gli danno un’anima.
Science measures the sky. Legends give it a soul.

It is fascinating to see how the ancients tried to explain natural phenomena in ways that allowed them to understand the world around them. Today, however, scientists explain the dog days of summer as the result of the Earth’s tilt and the amount of solar radiation that reaches our hemisphere during the hottest part of the season.

Modern science is based on observation, analysis, and mathematics. And yet, there is something profoundly poetic about imagining that the stars possess a soul and quietly guide the universe.

The Only Dog That Really Belongs in This Story

The Dog Days of Summer may be coming to an end… but apparently my dog didn’t get the memo!

I’m heading back to Italy at the end of August for a new season of Matta Italian Immersion Programs, and someone has already decided she’s coming too. When I turned my back, I found my little beagle had jumped inside, convinced that if she stayed perfectly still, she’d become the world’s cutest stowaway.

And now it’s back to packing… after evicting one very determined passenger!
