Per me, “Una notte a Napoli” dei Pink Martini, scelta come la colonna sonora della serie RAI Mina Settembre ambientata a Napoli, appartiene decisamente a quella seconda categoria. È una di quelle sigle televisive che non voglio mai saltare. Fin dalle primissime note, mi ritrovo subito a Napoli: il chiaro di luna che scintilla sul mare, le luci che brillano sul Golfo e una passeggiata serale sul lungomare. Prima ancora che finiscano i titoli di testa, sto già sognando il mio prossimo viaggio a Napoli!
For me, Pink Martini’s “Una notte a Napoli,” chosen as the opening theme song for the RAI series Mina Settembre, set in Naples definitely belongs to that second category. It’s one TV theme I never want to skip. From the very first notes, I’m transported straight back to Naples: moonlight shimmering on the sea, lights twinkling across the Gulf, and an evening stroll along the lungomare. Before the opening credits have even finished, I’m already dreaming about my next trip to Napoli!

In the series, Mina Settembre is the protagonist, a social worker at a community services center in central Naples who is constantly searching for solutions to other people’s problems. She is generous, idealistic, stubborn, and often considerably better at fixing everyone else’s life than her own. She possesses a strong social conscience and a determination to protect vulnerable people, even when doing so means bending a rule or two.

Ma chiariamo subito una cosa, quando si tratta di portare Mina sul piccolo schermo, però, gli sceneggiatori si prendono parecchie libertà rispetto alle storie originali di de Giovanni. E quando dico parecchie… intendo PARECCHIE. Quindi, se avete letto i libri, non aspettatevi che la serie televisiva li segua troppo fedelmente!
The series is inspired by the novels of Maurizio de Giovanni, the same acclaimed Neapolitan author who created Commissario Ricciardi and I Bastardi di Pizzofalcone. But let’s get one thing out of the way, when it comes to bringing Mina to television, however, the writers take plenty of liberties with de Giovanni’s original stories. And when I say plenty… I mean PLENTY. So if you’ve read the books, don’t expect the television series to follow them too closely!
È una fiction leggera, romantica e a volte volutamente zuccherosa. Per me sta da qualche parte tra le vibrazioni sentimentali di Sex and the City e il mondo rassicurante di Don Matteo, il prete investigatore che riesce a risolvere casi, problemi familiari, crisi morali e delitti prima che qualcuno abbia finito il secondo caffè.
It’s a light, romantic drama and sometimes deliberately sugary. To me it lives somewhere between the relationship vibes of Sex and the City and the reassuring universe of Don Matteo, the Italian priest-detective who somehow manages to solve crimes, family problems, moral crises, and assorted human catastrophes before anyone has finished a second espresso.
Ma la parte migliore della serie, a parte la sua leggerezza un po’ sciocca, sono le scene girate a Napoli! Continuo a premere il tasto pausa per ammirare un panorama della città, il mare, il lungomare o una strada che riconosco.
But the best part of the show, aside from its silliness are the scenes filmed in Napoli! I keep hitting pause to admire a panorama of the city, the sea, the lungomare, or a street I recognize.

“Una notte a Napoli” dipinge un ritratto sognante e cinematografico di Napoli. Sotto la luna, accanto al mare, la protagonista incontra un angelo che ha perso le ali e non riesce più a volare. Eppure, in qualche modo, lui riesce ancora a trasportarla verso il cielo, sospinta dall’ebbrezza dell’innamoramento. Ma il sogno non può durare per sempre. L’amore svanisce, il suo cuore si spezza e lei precipita di nuovo sulla terra, con il ricordo di un amore che, per un momento, le aveva fatto credere di poter volare.
“Una notte a Napoli” paints a dreamy, cinematic portrait of Naples. Beneath the moon, beside the sea, the narrator meets an angel who has lost his wings and can no longer fly. Yet somehow, he still sweeps her toward the heavens, carried there by the exhilaration of falling in love. But the dream can’t last forever. The romance fades, her heart is broken, and she comes tumbling back to earth, left with the memory of a love that once made her feel as though she could fly.
