Giorno del tacchino in America! Turkey Day: Thanksgiving – Ringraziamento

By Melissa Muldoon

Are you ready to sit down to a big meal?! Here in America we are about to celebrate Thanksgiving. I love everything about this traditional autumnal holiday that typically centers around a great big roasted turkey.

Since this is a particularly American holiday, that dates back to the year 1621 when it was carried out by the first pilgrims in gratitude for the harvest and for having survived the first difficult year in a new country, there really is no obvious reason to celebrate the holiday Italy or in other countries of the world. Since Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated in Italy and most Italians don’t eat a lot of turkey, I think right about now there is a mass exodus of turkey’s headed to ll bel paese!

As for me, I managed to detain one, and I am getting it ready to serve as the main dish for my family’s Thanksgiving dinner. I plan on roasting it in the oven and serving it with all the traditional American side dishes, like mashed potatoes, gravy, squash, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sautéed beans and fresh baked bread. For dessert, the crowning touch – homemade pumpkin pie with whipped cream!

I just love Thanksgiving day. It is a day for my family gets to relax and come together to eat one big giant meal, just like the Italians do on practically any given day of the week! I love it when my house is filled with the delicious aromas of a 22 pound turkey that takes 6 hours to roast. The smell is intoxicating and this is one day of the year when I don’t mind spending long hours in the kitchen preparing a great big meal.

Indeed, I am happy to be in the kitchen and I like setting the table with colorful china and decorating it with pumpkins, fall leaves and candles. Around this big beautiful table my family will gather and we will eat more than we should and we will enjoy, not only the wonderful savory flavors of the traditional foods, but we will also enjoy the moment and each other’s company.

Confucius once said: There is no man who can not eat or drink, but only a few are capable of appreciating the flavor.

So, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you from Melissa. It doesn’t matter where you live or if you typically celebrate Thanksgiving. I hope you take a moment to enjoy each and every savory flavor this holiday. Live in the moment and enjoy the company of those around you. Taste the joys of life and give thanks for all that you have!
