Ciao da Arezzo! Tutto continua ad andare meravigliosamente bene qui ad Arezzo. Non riesco a crederci, ma sono qui già da una settimana! Il tempo vola quando le giornate sono piene di incontri con gli amici, passeggiate mattutine tra le strade medievali, commissioni che si trasformano in piccole avventure, spritz nelle piazze assolate, eventi inaspettati e tutte quelle sorprese che questa città sembra custodire dietro ogni angolo.
Greetings from Arezzo! Everything continues to go wonderfully here in Arezzo. I can hardly believe it, but I’ve already been here for a week! Time flies when your days are filled with meeting friends, morning walks through medieval streets, errands that turn into tiny adventures, spritzes in sunny piazzas, unexpected events, and all the little surprises this city seems to keep tucked around every corner.
Anche se sono stata qui molte volte, forse perfino in una vita precedente, LOL, ogni giorno aggiungo una nuova esperienza al mio itinerario personale aretino: un mercato da esplorare, un caffè da provare, un negoziante con cui fare due chiacchiere, un panorama da ammirare o qualche curiosa iniziativa locale che mi fa pensare: Sì, è proprio per questo che amo vivere l’italiano, non soltanto studiarlo.
Even though I’ve been here many times before, perhaps even in a previous lifetime, LOL, every day I add a new experience to my personal Arezzo itinerary: a market to wander through, a café to try, a shopkeeper to chat with, a view to admire, or some quirky local happening that makes me think: Yes, this is exactly why I love living Italian, not just studying it.

Per esempio, con la mia amica Paola, sono andata a una conferenza sulla pace a Rondine, un centro che ospita giovani provenienti da paesi che stanno vivendo la guerra.
For example, my friend Paola and I attended a conference on peace at Rondine, an organization that hosts young people from countries affected by war.
Rondine si trova nella campagna vicino al Ponte Buriano, il magnifico ponte medievale che Leonardo da Vinci rese famoso dipingendolo sullo sfondo della Gioconda.
Rondine is located in the countryside near Ponte Buriano, the beautiful medieval bridge that Leonardo da Vinci famously painted in the background of the Mona Lisa.
Com’è strano, e meraviglioso, scrivere tutto questo del ponte, della Gioconda e di Leonardo in una frase che descrive una normale giornata della mia vita qui in Toscana, come se non fosse niente!
How surreal, and wonderful, it is to write all of this about the bridge, the Mona Lisa, and Leonardo in a sentence describing an ordinary day in my life here in Tuscany, as if it were nothing at all!

The Antique Fair: A Treasure Hunt in the Open Air
L’allegria continua! Questo weekend ad Arezzo c’era la famosa Fiera Antiquaria, e sono stata fuori praticamente tutto il giorno.
The fun continued this weekend at Arezzo’s famous Antique Fair, where I spent nearly the entire day wandering through the city.
Prima sono passata al supermercato per acquistare gli ingredienti necessari per preparare una bella zuppa di pollo: pollo arrosto ordinato dal macellaio, sedano, cipolle e carote.
Before the treasure hunting began, I stopped at the supermarket to gather ingredients for a homemade chicken soup: roast chicken from the butcher, celery, onions, and carrots.
Poi, naturalmente, alla fiera ho comprato alcune cose assolutamente non necessarie, (di cui non pensavo nemmeno di avere bisogno!) ma irresistibili: una camicia di seta, degli orecchini artigianali a forma di libellula e alcuni poster vintage tratti da vecchie pubblicità di Ferrari, Vespa e Campari.
Then, of course, at the fair I bought a few things that were completely unnecessary, (things I didn’t even know I needed!) but simply irresistible: a silk blouse, a pair of handcrafted dragonfly earrings, and several vintage posters featuring old advertisements for Ferrari, Vespa, and Campari.

Come ogni primo weekend del mese qui ad Arezzo c’erano musica dal vivo, sfilate di moda sulle scale del Duomo, cani, gatti, gelati, spritz, bambini, genitori, coppie innamorate, turisti e naturalmente tanti Aretini.
As on every first weekend of the month here in Arezzo, there was live music, fashion shows on the steps of the Cathedral, dogs, cats, gelato, spritzes, children, parents, couples in love, tourists, and of course plenty of Aretini.
E se cerchi qualcosa, puoi star sicura che qui lo troverai, anche se è nascosto sotto una pila di roba su una bancarella dietro l’angolo di Piazza Grande, all’ombra delle antiche logge Corridoio Vasariano!
And if you’re looking for something, you can be sure you’ll find it here, even if it’s hidden beneath a pile of odds and ends on a market stall tucked around the corner from Piazza Grande, in the shadow of the ancient Vasarian Loggias!

Artisans and Wonderfully Strange & Unique Things
Una delle cose che preferisco fare è parlare con gli artigiani e i venditori. Mi piace ascoltare le loro storie, osservare il loro lavoro e curiosare tra gli oggetti che hanno creato o raccolto. Ci sono cose bellissime, ma anche cose davvero insolite.
One of my favorite activities is chatting with artisans and vendors. I love hearing their stories, learning about their craft, and browsing through the fascinating items they’ve created or collected. Some things are beautiful. Others are delightfully bizarre.
Alcune mi fanno pensare: “Chi potrebbe mai comprare questo?” Eppure, come si dice, ognuno ha i propri gusti!
Every now and then I find myself wondering who would buy a particular object… and then I remember that taste is a wonderfully personal thing!

Vorrei accompagnarvi in una piccola galleria fotografica delle cose più particolari che ho visto oggi alla Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo, tra oggetti curiosi, tesori nascosti e piccoli capricci che sembravano chiamarmi da una bancarella all’altra.
I’d like to take you on a little photo tour of some of the most unusual things I spotted today at the Arezzo Antique Fair, from curious objects and hidden treasures to those irresistible finds that seemed to call my name from one stall after another.
E già che ci siamo, vi lascio anche qualche parola utile e alcune domande pratiche da usare quando visitate un mercato italiano, soprattutto quando qualcosa vi salta all’occhio e pensate: “Ecco, questo deve proprio venire a casa con me!”
And while we’re at it, I’ll share some useful vocabulary and practical questions you can use when visiting an Italian market, especially when something catches your eye and you find yourself thinking, “Yep, this absolutely has to come home with me!”

In the End, This Is the Secret for learning Italian!
Più tempo trascorro in Italia, più mi convinco che imparare una lingua significa molto più che studiare la grammatica.
Significa vivere esperienze, fare conversazioni spontanee, ascoltare storie, curiosare nei mercati, assaggiare nuovi sapori e lasciarsi sorprendere da ciò che si incontra lungo la strada.
The longer I stay in Italy, the more convinced I become that learning a language is about far more than grammar. It means collecting experiences, having spontaneous conversations, listening to stories, exploring markets, tasting new foods, and allowing yourself to be surprised.
L’italiano non vive soltanto nei libri. Vive nelle piazze, nelle fiere, nei bar, nelle botteghe degli artigiani e nelle persone che incontri ogni giorno.
Italian doesn’t live only in textbooks. It lives in piazzas, festivals, cafés, artisan workshops, and in the people you meet every day.
Adesso vi lascio. Ho una zuppa sul fuoco, una città da esplorare e probabilmente qualche altra bancarella piena di tesori che mi aspetta dietro l’angolo. Ci sentiamo presto da Arezzo!

A very Italian Idiom per shopping!
“Mi è saltato all’occhio”
“Mi è saltato all’occhio” è un’espressione molto comune in italiano.
Letteralmente significa “it jumped into my eye,” ma in realtà significa:
“It caught my eye.” It’s often used when something stands out unexpectedly and immediately grabs your attention.
Quel vestito mi è saltato all’occhio
appena sono entrata nel negozio.
That dress caught my eye the moment I walked into the shop.
In fact, those fabulous gold Prada platform sandals
(pictured above) really “jumped out at me”
(mi sono saltate all’occhio),
and I kind of really wanted them! LOL
You can use this expression for much more than clothes. A painting, a beautiful building, a vintage Vespa, a colorful market stall, or even a handsome stranger can also saltare all’occhio!
The perfect phrase when you spot something so irresistible that you instantly think: “Deve venire a casa con me!” “That has to come home with me!
