Dive into the World of “Luca”: Disney Pixar’s Italian Adventure — Cinque Terre, Friendship & Sea Monsters

Here’s a useful pair of Italian expressions
that fit the film Luca perfectly:

SALIRE A GALLA vs. VENIRE A GALLA

Inspired by Disney Pixar’s Luca and the sparkling waters of the Cinque Terre, here are two wonderfully useful Italian expressions that may look similar, but aren’t quite the same.

SALIRE A GALLA → TO RISE OR FLOAT TO THE SURFACE
Think of Luca swimming up from the depths of the Ligurian Sea:

Luca sale a galla per vedere cosa succede sulla terraferma.

Luca rises to the surface to see what’s happening on land.

But there’s another expression Italians use all the time:

VENIRE A GALLA → TO COME TO LIGHT / BE REVEALED

It’s often used when a secret, truth, problem, or hidden fact finally emerges.

Prima o poi, la verità viene a galla.
Sooner or later, the truth comes out.

And it’s perfect for Luca:

Alla fine, il segreto di Luca e Alberto viene a galla.
In the end, Luca and Alberto’s secret comes to light.

In this story, things have a habit of venire a galla, both figuratively AND literally, especially when one little splash of water is enough to reveal scales, fins, and a sea-monster tail!

Another MATTA TIP: When you learn an Italian expression, don’t stop at the literal meaning. Look for the figurative meaning too. That’s often where the most colorful, natural Italian is hiding... just beneath the surface.

Want more Italian inspired by Luca, the Cinque Terre, friendship, sea monsters, and the irresistible dream of an Italian summer?

Una notte a Napoli: Pink Martini & the Mina Settembre Theme song /Colonna Sonora

🎶 Che cos’è una “colonna sonora”?

WHAT IS A “COLONNA SONORA”?

In Italian, la colonna sonora means the soundtrack, the music that accompanies a film, television series, or other production.

Literally, the expression breaks down as:

COLONNA → COLUMN

SONORA → RELATING TO SOUND

The adjective sonoro / sonora means related to sound or audible. So, quite literally, a colonna sonora is a “column of sound.”

But Italians also use colonna sonora figuratively to describe the music associated with a particular time, experience, or memory.

Questa canzone è stata la colonna sonora della mia estate.
This song was the soundtrack of my summer.

Quella musica è la colonna sonora della nostra storia.
That music is the soundtrack of our story.

Sometimes a song becomes inseparable from a place, a person, a summer in Italy, or a moment you never want to forget.

So here’s a little Matta question for you:

Se la vostra vita avesse una colonna sonora, quale canzone scegliereste?

If your life had a soundtrack, which song would you choose?
Scrivetemelo nei commenti! 👇🎵

One expression. One memory. One more way to make Italian part of your life.

🇮🇹 Imparare una lingua significa anche darle una colonna sonora!
