Sono tornata ad Austin dopo sette meravigliose settimane trascorse vivendo la lingua in Italia, tra Arezzo, Napoli e Gaeta. Ho lasciato un pezzetto di cuore nel Bel Paese… ma non ho lasciato lì l’italiano.
I’ve returned to Austin after seven wonderful weeks of living the language in Italy, between Arezzo, Naples, and Gaeta. I may have left a piece of my heart in the Bel Paese… but I certainly didn’t leave the Italian language behind.
A casa negli stati uniti ogni volta che entro in un negozio, ordino un caffè o ricevo un pacco alla porta, il mio cervello continua automaticamente a formulare le risposte in italiano. Per un attimo devo ricordarmi… “Aspetta, sono negli stati uniti!”
At home here in the United States, every time I walk into a store, order a coffee, or answer the door for a delivery, my brain automatically wants to respond in Italian. For a moment I have to remind myself… “Wait… I’m in the States!”

And that’s exactly the beautiful part of returning home from Italy.
You don’t have to stop using your Italian simply because

Il viaggio non finisce quando atterra l’aereo. Anzi, è proprio lì che comincia la parte più importante. Ogni giorno possiamo continuare ad ascoltare, leggere, parlare e pensare in italiano. Bastano pochi minuti… magari il tempo di un espresso.
The journey doesn’t end when the airplane lands. In many ways, that’s when the most important part begins. Every day we can keep listening, reading, speaking, and even thinking in Italian. It only takes a few minutes… perhaps just the time it takes to enjoy an espresso.
