Cercate un film allegro e spensierato per l’estate? Uno in cui potete tuffarvi, sguazzare un po’ e, almeno con la fantasia, nuotare nel mare azzurro della Riviera ligure? Allora è arrivato il momento di guardare “Luca,” il film d’animazione Disney e Pixar diretto dal regista genovese Enrico Casarosa.
Looking for a cheerful, feel-good movie this summer? One you can jump into, splash around in, and, at least in your imagination, swim through the blue waters of the Italian Riviera? Then it’s time to watch “Luca,” the Disney and Pixar animated film directed by Genoa-born filmmaker Enrico Casarosa.

E devo dire che avevano ragione loro! Tra mare, gelato, pasta, biciclette, Vespe e piazzette italiane, il film è praticamente una cartolina estiva animata con le pinne.
The film had been on my watch list for quite a while, but in the end it took two of my most favorite little people to take me by the hand and introduce me to Luca, Alberto, and their little Ligurian world. And I have to admit, they were right! Between the sea, gelato, pasta, bicycles, Vespas, and Italian piazzas, the movie is practically an animated summer postcard with fins.

Disney e Pixar hanno distribuito Luca nel 2021. La storia si svolge nell’immaginario borgo marinaro di Portorosso, un affettuoso mosaico di luoghi della costa ligure, soprattutto delle Cinque Terre. Persino il nome sembra fare l’occhiolino a Monterosso e Portovenere. Sottolinea che nella piazza si ritrovano echi di Vernazza, nel paesaggio arroccato sulla collina richiami a Manarola e, nell’edificio che ha ispirato la casa di Giulia, tracce di Riomaggiore.
Disney and Pixar released Luca in 2021. The story unfolds in the fictional seaside town of Portorosso, an affectionate patchwork of places along the Ligurian coast, especially the Cinque Terre. Even the name seems to wink at Monterosso and Portovenere. It points out echoes of Vernazza in the piazza, Manarola in the hillside setting, and Riomaggiore in the building that inspired Giulia’s home.
La Trama / The Plot
Luca Paguro è un ragazzino curioso, timido e pieno di sogni. C’è soltanto un piccolo dettaglio: è un mostro marino che assume forma umana quando esce dall’acqua.
Luca Paguro is a curious, shy boy full of dreams. There’s just one tiny detail: he’s a sea monster who takes human form when he leaves the water.
Quando incontra il più spericolato Alberto Scorfano, i due si avventurano a Portorosso, dove fanno amicizia con la vivacissima Giulia. Tra gare, biciclette, piatti di pasta e sogni di possedere una Vespa, Luca scopre il coraggio di esplorare un mondo completamente nuovo.
When he meets the more adventurous Alberto Scorfano, the two venture into Portorosso, where they befriend the spirited Giulia. Between races, bicycles, plates of pasta, and dreams of owning a Vespa, Luca finds the courage to explore an entirely new world.
Ma c’è un problema piuttosto bagnato: basta uno spruzzo d’acqua per rivelare la loro vera natura!
But there’s one rather soggy problem: a splash of water is all it takes to reveal their true nature!

Enrico Casarosa: When a Childhood Friendship Becomes a Movie
La cosa che rende “Luca,” così speciale è che dietro le squame e le pinne si nasconde una storia molto personale. Enrico Casarosa, nato e cresciuto a Genova, ha modellato il personaggio di Luca in parte su se stesso e Alberto sul suo vero amico d’infanzia, Alberto Surace. Come racconta Casarosa: “Il mio migliore amico Alberto era un po’ un terremoto, io ero molto timido.” Proprio quell’amicizia, che lo spinse fuori dalla sua zona di comfort e lo aiutò a crescere, è diventata il cuore del film.
What makes “Luca,” so special is that beneath the scales and fins lies a very personal story. Genoa-born Enrico Casarosa modeled the character Luca partly on himself and Alberto on his real childhood friend, Alberto Surace. As Casarosa recalls: “My best friend Alberto was a bit of a whirlwind, while I was very shy.” That friendship, which pushed him beyond his comfort zone and helped him grow, became the heart of the film.

Il vero Alberto Surace presta persino la voce a un pescatore nella versione italiana del film. Il ragazzino che una volta spingeva Enrico verso nuove avventure è finito, decenni dopo, dentro il suo film.
The real Alberto Surace even voices a fisherman in the Italian version of the movie. The boy who once pushed Enrico toward new adventures eventually found his way, decades later, right into his friend’s film.

Ma perché trasformare due ragazzini in mostri marini?
But why turn two boys into sea monsters?
Per il regista Casarosa, il mostro marino funziona come metafora del sentirsi diversi, fuori posto o non abbastanza “fighi”. Lui e Alberto, ha raccontato, si sentivano un po’ estranei da bambini. Così le creature nascoste sotto la superficie diventano un modo giocoso e tenero per parlare di identità, diversità e accettazione. “Rai Cultura” riporta le parole di Casarosa: “Eravamo anche un po’ ‘estranei’.”
For the director, Casarosa, the sea monster works as a metaphor for feeling different, out of place, or simply not quite “cool” enough. He and Alberto felt a little like outsiders as children. The creatures hiding beneath the surface therefore become a playful, tender way of talking about identity, difference, and acceptance. “Rai Cultura” quote the words of Casarosa: “We were even a little bit outsiders”

I mostri marini di “Luca,” affondano le pinne nelle leggende della costa ligure. Casarosa era affascinato dalle creature raffigurate sulle antiche carte nautiche e dalle storie locali di draghi e misteriosi abitanti del mare. Per dare vita a queste creature, il team Pixar studiò anche mappe rinascimentali, fontane, mosaici e sculture italiane.
Luca’s sea monsters dip their fins into legends from the Ligurian coast. Casarosa was fascinated by the creatures depicted on antique nautical maps and by local tales of sea dragons and mysterious creatures lurking beneath the waves. To bring them to life, the Pixar team also studied Renaissance maps, fountains, mosaics, and Italian sculptures.

One of the most curious is the legend of the octopus of Tellaro, which, according to tradition, rang the village bells to warn the inhabitants that pirates were approaching. A sea monster that saves the village instead of terrorizing it? Luca and Alberto would surely approve!

Per creare Portorosso, gli artisti Pixar non si sono limitati a guardare qualche fotografia: sono andati direttamente in Liguria. Durante due viaggi di ricerca, nel 2016 e nel 2019, hanno disegnato, fotografato e assorbito la vita della Riviera, studiando le case colorate, i vicoli, le barche dei pescatori, le piazzette e persino il modo in cui la luce si riflette sulle facciate.
To create Portorosso, Pixar’s artists didn’t just look at a few photographs: they went straight to Liguria. During two research trips in 2016 and 2019, they sketched, photographed, and soaked up life along the Riviera, studying the colorful houses, narrow lanes, fishing boats, piazzas, and even the way light reflects off the buildings.
