L’amore è nell’aria!

I can feel it. Love is in the air!

Ci credo davvero, ed è proprio questa la ragione mi porta sull’orlo delle lacrime ogni volta che guardo la prima scena del film “Love Actually.”

I do believe this and it is precisely why I am brought to tears every time I watch the opening sequence of the film “Love Actually”.

“Ogni volta che mi sento demoralizzato con lo stato del mondo, penso al cancello degli arrivi all’aeroporto di Heathrow. L’opinione generale dice che viviamo in un mondo di odio e avidità, ma io non vedo questo. Mi sembra che l’amore sia ovunque. Spesso non è particolarmente dignitoso o rilevante per la stampa, ma è sempre lì…padri e figli, madri e figlie, mariti e mogli, fidanzati, fidanzate, vecchi amici. Quando gli aerei hanno colpito le torri gemelle, per quanto ne so, nessuna delle telefonate dai piani fatte dalle persone all’interno erano messaggi di odio, erano tutti messaggi d’amore. Se si guarda attentamente, credo che l’amore è…ovunque”.

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport. General opinion starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. Seems to me love is everywhere. Often it isn’t particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it is always there…fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the twin towers as far as I know none of the phone calls from the planes from the people on board were messages of hate, they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I have a sneaky feeling that Love is…all around”.

Mi commuovo sempre dalla scena di apertura di questo film quando Hugh Grant dice queste parole e vedo le immagine delle persone che si abbracciano all’aeroporto.  Perchè è vero. All’aeroporto di San Francisco l’altro giorno, mi sono sentita questa ondata d’amore intorno a me guardando i nuovi arrivati accolti e abbracciati. Io me stessa sono stata sopraffatta dai miei stessi sentimenti d’amore, mentre ho abbracciato la mia amica Marta. Lei torna in Italia dopo aver trascorso gli ultimi due mesi con la mia famiglia qui in California. A causa del nostro tempo passato insieme, Marta è entrata a far parte della nostra famiglia. Ora trovo molto difficile lasciarla andare, ma so che rimarremo vicino attraverso la magia di internet e Skype.

I am always moved by the opening scene of this film when Hugh Grant says these words and I see the images of the people hugging at the airport. Because it is true. Standing in the San Francisco airport the other day, I felt this surge of love all around me watching new arrivals being greeted and embraced. I myself was overwhelmed by my own feelings of love, as I tearfully hugged my friend Marta goodbye. She returns to Italy after spending the last two months with my family here in California. During our time together, Marta became part of our family and now I find it extremely difficult watch her go, but I know we will remain close through the magic of the internet and Skype.

Rimango ancora una volta stupita dalla potenza delle connessioni umane. Nonostante la cultura, la lingua e esperienze diverse, troviamo sempre modi per superare gli ostacoli ad amarci, anche quando ci sono grandi svantaggi e grandi distanze. In un altro video clip preferito di “Love Actually”, al mio parere una delle scene più romantiche del film, Jamie (Colin firth) chiede ad Aurelia di sposarlo. I due si innamorano, nonostante non parlino la stessa lingua. Ma l’amore è una forte motivazione e i due scelgono di imparare la lingua dell’altra – lui portoghese e lei inglese.

I am once again amazed by the power of human connections. Despite culture, language and diverse backgrounds, we always find ways of overcoming obstacles and learn to love despite great disadvantages and great distances. In another favorite clip from “Love Actually”, and one of the most romantic scenes of the film in my opinion, Jamie (Colin Firth) proposes to Aurelia. The two fall in love despite the fact they don’t speak each other languages. Yet love is a strong motivator and each choses to learn the others language – he Portuguese and she English.

L’amore arriva in tutti i diversi tipi di dimensioni, età, forme e pacchetti. Siamo tutti esseri umani, vulnerabili e i rapporti sono disordinati e complicati… ma alla fine ne vale la pena. Essenzialmente sono le persone speciali nella nostra vita che sono le chiavi della nostra felicità. È importante riconoscere questo e abbracciarle finché possiamo.

Love comes in all different kinds of sizes, ages, shapes and packages. We are all human, vulnerable and relationships are messy and complicated…but in the end it is worth the effort. Ultimately it is the special people in our lives that are the keys to our happiness. It is important to recognize this and embrace them while we can.

Quindi questo S. Valentino, fate un respiro e rivalutate. Penso che se vi prenderete un momento che anche vi troverete che l’amore è…ovunque. Se non mi credete, basta andare al cancello di arrivo dall’aeroporto più vicino e vedrete l’amore in azione!

So this Valentine’s Day, take a breath and reassess. I think that if you take a moment that you too will find that love is… all around. If you don’t believe me, just go to your nearest airport arrival gate and you will see love in action!
