Tutto comincia nel 1767, nella villa immaginaria di Ombrosa, in Liguria. Dopo un litigio domestico con il padre — causato da un piatto di lumache che Cosimo si rifiuta categoricamente di mangiare — il giovane prende una decisione radicale: sale su un albero e giura di non scendere mai più. E mantiene la promessa.
The story begins in 1767, in the imaginary Ligurian village of Ombrosa. After a quarrel with his father — sparked by Cosimo’s refusal to eat a revolting dish of snails — the young boy makes a radical decision: he climbs a tree and vows never to come down. And he keeps his promise.
Da quel momento, la sua vita si svolge interamente tra i rami. Si sposta da un albero all’altro, esplora boschi, incontra briganti, pirati, nobili eccentrici e amori appassionati. Dialoga con figure storiche come Napoleone e Diderot, arriva persino a redigere una costituzione. Sempre sospeso tra cielo e terra, Cosimo osserva il mondo dall’alto, partecipando senza mai appartenere del tutto.
From that moment on, his life unfolds entirely among the branches. He travels from tree to tree, explores forests, encounters bandits, pirates, eccentric nobles, and passionate lovers. He corresponds with historical figures like Napoleon and Diderot and even drafts a constitution. Always suspended between sky and earth, Cosimo observes the world from above, participating without ever fully belonging.
La storia è narrata dal fratello minore, Biagio, che ci accompagna con uno sguardo affettuoso e lucido attraverso questa esistenza fuori dall’ordinario di suo fratello.

Fedele al suo giuramento fino all’ultimo respiro, Cosimo non toccherà mai più terra. Ormai anziano, a 65 anni, si aggrappa a una mongolfiera di passaggio e viene trascinato via sopra il mare, dissolvendosi all’orizzonte. Una conclusione poetica, quasi mitologica, che suggella una vita vissuta secondo principi incrollabili.
Faithful to his vow until his final breath, Cosimo never touches the ground again. At age 65, he seizes a passing hot air balloon and is carried away over the sea, vanishing into the horizon. A poetic, almost mythic ending that seals a life lived with unwavering conviction.

Libertà, distanza e identità

Cosimo ci ricorda che a volte, per capire davvero il mondo, bisogna cambiare prospettiva… magari anche salire su un albero. La sua distanza fisica dalla società diventa una distanza critica: osserva, riflette, giudica e partecipa alla vita degli altri, senza mai lasciarsi ingabbiare del tutto. In questo modo, diventa un simbolo di libertà individuale e della possibilità di vivere secondo le proprie regole.
Cosimo reminds us that sometimes, to truly understand the world, we need to change perspective… perhaps even climb a tree. His physical distance from society becomes a critical distance: he observes, reflects, judges, and participates in the lives of others without ever allowing himself to be fully caged in. In this way, he becomes a symbol of individual freedom and the possibility of living by one’s own rules.
Calvino sembra suggerire anche la figura dell’artista o dell’intellettuale: qualcuno che guarda il mondo con partecipazione, ma anche con distacco, mantenendo una prospettiva unica. Cosimo non fugge dal mondo: lo guarda meglio, dall’alto, restando fedele a se stesso anche quando il mondo insiste a tirarlo giù.
Calvino also seems to suggest the figure of the artist or intellectual: someone who looks at the world with both engagement and detachment, maintaining a unique perspective. Cosimo does not escape the world: he sees it more clearly from above, remaining true to himself even when the world insists on pulling him down.
