Sono nel mezzo di tutte delle preparazioni natalizie. Mi sto godendo cantare le canzoni natalizie e guardo ricomparire tute le decorazioni messe fuori lo scorso anno. Ce ne sono tante! Ci sono le pupazzi di Babbo Natale, la Befana, le luci, le renne, le stelle e le innumerevoli ceste di sempreverdi con fiocchi rossi. Per me è una gioia aprire tutte le scatole e disfare gli addobbi per fare l’albero e scoprire di nuovo le statuine preziose del presepe. L’anno scorso abbiamo ricevuto il dono di un presepe e Francesca, la nostra studentessa di scambioche ha vissuto con noi per un anno, ha realizzato il nostro primo presepe italiano. Questo Dicembre, visto che Francesca è ritornata in Puglia, l’ho realizzato da sola. Però vi confesso di aver avuto un po’ di aiuto. Attraverso la meraviglia di Skype ho avuto il sostegno prezioso di Vita, l’amica di Francesca, che mi ha dato alcuni suggerimenti e segreti come si fa un bel presepe italiano seguendo le tradizione italiane.

I am in the middle of preparing for the holidays. I am enjoying singing Christmas carols and seeing all the decorations that I had stowed away a year ago reappear. There are so many! There are Santa Clauses, la Befana, reindeer, stars and countless baskets of evergreens with red bows. For me it is a a joy to open the boxes and unpack the ornaments for the tree and discover all over again the figurines for the presepe. Last year we were given a presepe from Italy and Francesca, our exchange student that lived with us for the year, put together our first Italian presepe. This December, seeing as Francesca has returned to Puglia, I put it together myself. But, I have to confess that I had a little bit of help. Through the marvels of Skype I had the valuable support of Vita, Francesca’s friend and classmate, that gave me many suggestions and a couple of secrets for how to make a really great presepe following Italian tradition.

A differenza del presepi che si trovano tipicamente negli Stati Uniti, che per la maggior parte si comprano con tutti i pezzi già fissati in una capanna, i presepi italiani si devono realizzare usando statuine singole e un po’ di più creatività. Si comincia con pacchetti di muschio e paglia che sono fatto apposti e venduti per questo scopo. C’è anche carta con disegni fatta esclusivamente per i presepi. Quando la carta è strategicamente messa sopra scatole ordinarie di scarpe, che si trovano al fondo dell’armadio, crea l’illusione di un paesaggio bellissimo in cui pastori e pecore posano felicemente. Ci vuole un po’ di pazienza per assemblare le scatole nelle posizioni giuste e poi premere la carta per dare un aspetto naturale , che dà l’impressione di rocce, campi e grotte. Una volta è completata la base, si può iniziare a mettere il muschio in una maniera disinvolta…però cercare di farlo in maniere che sembri realmente del prato è più difficile di quello che sembra!! Pazienza! Ho cercato nel mio giardino per i sassi e i piccoli ramoscelli da aggiungere al paesaggio. Poi si mettono con cautela le statuine di Maria e Giuseppe, l’angelo e le altre persone che vengono ad adorare il bambino. Accanto a Maria è il suo asino e accanto a Giuseppe è il suo bue. Attenzione! Secondo Francesca e Vita, non si mette mai la figurina del bambino nella scena fino alla vigilia e non si mettono le statuine dei Remagi nel presepe fino al gennaio 6, Epifania il giorno in cui i re hanno finalmente trovato il luogo in cui stavano il bambino Gesù e i suoi genitori.

Contrary to the nativity scenes that typically can be found here in the US, that for the most part are already assembled with figures fixed into little mangers, the Italian nativity scenes are created using stand alone figurines and require a lot more creativity. You begin with packets of moss and straw that are made and sold specifically for building your own presepe. There is also specially designed papers for the presepi. When the paper is strategically placed over ordinary shoe boxes, that you find in the back of your closet, it creates an illusion of a beautiful pastoral setting in which shepherds and sheep can happily wander about. It takes a little patience to assemble the boxes in perfect positions and then scrunch up the paper to make a natural looking effect that gives the impression of rocks, fields and grottos. Once the base is established, you can begin to place the moss in a nonchalant manner…but sometimes trying to get something to look effortless and natural takes more work that it should! Patience! I searched in my garden for little pebbles and small twigs to add to the scene. Then you carefully place the figures of Mary and Joseph, the angel and the other people who come to adore the baby. Next to Mary is her donkey and next to Joseph is his. Attenzione! According to Francesca and Vita, you never put the baby into the setting until Christmas Eve and you don’t put the figures of the kings into the mix until January 6, Epiphany the day in which the kings finally found the manger in which rested the baby Gesù and and his parents.

Eccolo! Il presepe è finito. Per un tocco finale, ho messo come sfondo la scena, uno delle mie pitture. Penso che vada bene e aumenta l’illusione che la grotta del bambino si trova nel paese fuori la città di Betlemme. Mi piace il fatto che, ogni anno il presepe sarà un po’ diverso dall’anno precedente e che si può continuare ad aggiungere altri elementi. Forse l’anno prossimo metterò alcune luci! Adesso tutti a lavoro! Fate un bel presepe tutto vostro.

Here it is! The nativity scene is finished. For a final touch, I have placed as a backdrop for the scene one of my own paintings. I think it goes well and heightens the illusion that the baby is situated in a grotto outside the city of Bethlehem. I like the fact that every year the presepe will be a little bit different from the year before and that you can continue to add figures and new elements. Perhaps next year I will add some lights! Now everyone get busy! Make your own presepe of your own unique design.
