La Canzone!

Ora che ho avventurato nel regno di podcasting, ho avuto questa idea brillante: non sarebbe grande da avere una colonna sonora “matta”? La scrittura e la pianificazione di ogni episodio del mio podcast è una cosa molto creativa su tanti livelli differenti. Un podcast va un passo oltre la scrittura di un post perché ora ho la possibilità di concentrarmi sul miglioramento della pronuncia, così come sull’uso dell’audio e della musica per approfondire l’esperienza d’apprendimento. Per il podcast “Tutti matti per l’Italiano” volevo una canzone viva e motivante, qualcosa che rispecchiasse musicalmente gli obiettivi e la natura ottimista del blog di Studentessa Matta.

Today I’m excited to premier my new song, “Vivi, sorridi, divertiti”! Now that I have ventured into podcasting, I had this cool idea: Wouldn’t it be great to have my own “Matta” theme song? Writing and planning each of my podcast episodes is a very creative process on so many levels. A podcast goes beyond a blog post because I can now focus on improving Italian pronunciation and using audio and music to enhance the learning process. For the Tutti Matti per l’Italiano podcast, I wanted a song that would be lively and motivating, something that would musically reflect the objectives and upbeat nature of the Studentessa Matta blog.

Appena ho deciso di intraprendere il progetto di creare una canzone per il podcast, mi sono resa conto che, naturalmente, avrei avuto bisogno di un musicista. Purtroppo Giorgia e Jovanotti sono un po’ troppo occupati in questi giorni per collaborare con me ad un brano musicale. Che peccato! Allora, dove si trova un compositore per podcast? Boh, ovviamente in internet! Presto mi sono resa conto però che, mentre sono disponibili tante opzioni generiche, non avrei trovato facilmente qualcuno che avrebbe potuto dare alla mia canzone il tocco personale di cui aveva bisogno.

Once I decided to embark on creating a song for the podcast, I realized that, of course, I would need a musician. Unfortunately, Giorgia and Jovanotti are too busy to collaborate with me on a piece of music. What a pity! So, where does one go to look for a composer for podcast music? Why the internet, of course! I soon realized, however, that while there are many generic options available, I wouldn’t find someone to give my song the personal touch it needed.

Il passo successivo: mi sono rivolta a mio figlio per qualche consiglio. Lui ascolta un sacco di podcast, ha buone idee, così come tanti amici creativi. Lui ha avuto l’idea di contattare uno studente universitario di musica con cui avrei potuto facilmente collaborare. “Che idea fantastica” ho pensato io! Attraverso un passaparola ho trovato Paden Schmidt che studia chitarra elettrica e composizione musicale a San Jose State.

The next step…I turned to my son for some advice. He listens to many podcasts and has great ideas and many creative friends. He suggested contacting a university music student who would be more readily available with whom I could personally collaborate. What a great idea, I thought! Through word of mouth, I found Paden Schmidt, who studies electric guitar and music composition at San Jose State University.

Lui ha accettato volentieri di partecipare al mio progetto. Per mettere in moto la collaborazione, ho condiviso con Paden i miei gusti musicali e il tipo di ritmo e atmosfera che volevo. Gli ho anche inviato dei link dei miei cantanti italiani preferiti, precisando che non volevo solo una canzone strumentale, ma anche con voce. Forse è stata ambiziosa da parte mia, ma Paden mi ha detto che il progetto era possibile.

Readily he accepted my project. To get the ball rolling, I shared my musical tastes and the kind of music I wanted with Paden. I also sent him links to my favorite Italian singers, specifying that I wanted these to be a song that would also have singing in Italian. Kind of a tall ambitious order, but Paden said it could be done.

Dopo circa un mese ho ricevuto notizia da Paden che aveva la bozza pronta e voleva che io ascoltassi la musica e che gli dessi un feedback. Ero davvero entusiasta di sentire ciò che aveva creato! Mi ha subito colpito il suo talento! Che emozione ascoltare la prima versione della canZone! In realtà ho ballato intorno alla stanza mentre la ascoltavo! Ma essendo una persona creativa, la prima versione della canzone mi ha dato nuove idee per renderla migliore. Il processo di collaborazione creativa è sempre così: una bella idea passa da un’altra persona e diventa ancora piu’ bella!

After about a month, I received news from Paden that he had a song’s first draft ready and wanted me to listen and give him my feedback. I was excited to hear what he had created! I was immediately impressed by his talent! What a thrill to hear the first version of the song. I danced around the room, listening to it! But, being a creative person, the first version of the song gave me some ideas to make it even better. The creative, collaborative process is always like this: one good idea leads to the next better one!

Per avere una seconda opinione ho anche fatto ascoltare la canzone alla mia amica italiana Gloria Acerboni, una cantante classica professionista nonché mia paziente tutor in italiano. Ogni settimana prendo un caffè con Gloria e parliamo di tutto e di più e sempre mi aiuto con la mia pronuncia. Dopo aver ascoltato la canzone il suo primo commento: pensava che la musica dovesse essere più allegra per riflettere la natura del Blog “Studentessa Matta”. Così abbiamo deciso di cambiare la tonalità del brano da minore a maggiore per renderlo più vivace. Abbiamo anche deciso di cambiare alcune parole per trasmettere chiaramente la mia filosofia sul vivere e sul come imparare bene. Quando ho scelto il nome “matta” come titolo del blog, la mia intenzione era di infondere l’idea che tutto è possibile se si è un po’ matti e si lasciano andare la proprie inibizioni. Così, si è più liberi di correre rischi e fare cose prima impensate. La vita è un’avventura se ci buttiamo in qualcosa completamente; nessun ostacolo potrà fermarci, finché la voglia di volare sarà più forte della paura di cadere (Angelo de Pascalis).

To get a second opinion, I also shared the song with my Italian friend Gloria, a professional singer. Her first comment was that the music should be more upbeat and cheerful to reflect the nature of the Studentessa Matta blog. So we decided to change the song’s key from minor to major to make it more lively. We also changed a few words to convey my philosophy of living and learning well. When I chose the name “matta” as a blog title, I wanted to convey the idea that anything is possible if we go a little crazy and let go of inhibitions. In so doing, you can take risks and do things you never thought possible. Life is an adventure if we give ourselves up to something completely; no object can stop us as long as the desire to fly is stronger than the fear of falling.

Un pomeriggio, mentre bevevamo un espresso, Gloria ed io abbiamo collaborato ad un nuovo testo per la canzone. Ecco quello che abbiamo combinato. 

One afternoon while we drank an espresso, Gloria and I put our heads together and came up with these lyrics.

Ero davvero emozionata dal nuovo testo e l’ho inviato con il mio feedback a Paden. Dopo un paio di settimane ho ricevuto una nuova versione della canzone. Questa volta la musica e il ritmo era perfetta, ma c’era ancora un po’ di lavoro da fare per perfezionare la pronuncia delcantante.  Non essendo un madrelingua Ilker, il cantante, ha pronunciate male un paio di parole. Gloria era fermamente convinta che le parole devono essere pronunciate bene, e così come la cantante professionista che lei è, ha aiutato Ilker con il suo accento. Qualche volta l’apprendimento di una lingua così come la creazione di una canzone e’ come dare alla luce un bambino; può essere difficile e si deve continuare a spingere e ci vuole un sacco di lavoro!

I was excited about the new text and sent it along with my feedback about the music to Paden. After a couple of weeks, I had a new version of the song. This time the music and tempo were perfect, but there was still a little work to be done to perfect the singer’s pronunciation. Not being a native speaker, Ilker, the singer, had mispronounced a couple of words. Gloria was adamant that the words must be spoken well, so being the professional singer she is, she helped Ilker with his accent. Sometimes learning a language is like giving birth to a baby; it can be difficult, and you have to keep pushing, and it takes a lot of work!

Adesso la canzone è finita finalmente! Evviva!! Sono molto orgogliosa, come una mamma con la sua nuova bimba! È stato un lungo e faticoso parto, ma ne valeva la pena! Anche a Gloria, la mia precisa cantante italiana, piace. A questo punto voglio ringraziare tutti i miei collaboratori: mio figlio che prima di tutto ha suggerito l’idea di creare una colonna sonora e che mi ha anche aiutato a trovare un musicista; Paden che ha creato la musica e IIker per aver cantato la canzone. Voglio anche ringraziare la mia cara amica Gloria, che come una levatrice dedicata e amorevole, ha aiutato nel parto della canzone! Mille grazie a tutti!

Now the song is finally finished! Hurray! I am like a proud mother with her new baby! It was a long birthing process, but it was worth it! Even Gloria, my precise Italian singer, likes it. At this point, I want to thank all my collaborators; my son, who suggested creating the music in the first place and helped me find a musician; Paden, who created the music and Ilker, for singing the song. I also want to thank my dear friend Gloria, who, like a dedicated and loving midwife, helped deliver the new song! Thanks to everyone!
