Bliu Bliu Italian Online Learning Site

By Melissa Muldoon

I made an interesting discovery on the internet the other day. It is called “Bliu Bliu” and it is a site that facilitates learning a language. At this point you all know me pretty well! I go around with a raised antenna in the hopes that I will find new ways of studying and learning Italian – especially free ones! So I decided after our Skype chat to jump on over to the Bliu Bliu site to learn some more.

In fact I did even more than that! I contacted Claudio Santorio, the brains behind the project that was launched two years ago, February 29 2012, to ask him how his idea was born. He wrote to me from Vlinius Lithuania, where the temperature today is -6 gradi Celsius (20 degrees F). Yikes! But I think that his passion for his project is keeping him warm. According to Claudio, the Bliu Bliu concept is simple: Learning a language should be fun! Here is what he said to me:

So, I will tell you the story of Bliu Bliu. I was studying Lithuanian, the usual grammar, the rules, the memorization of long word lists. Then at page twenty of the grammar book I found a story, the story of a child that went to visit his grandfather in the country. It was a simple story, but a story of twenty lines that I could understand. I asked myself: who knows how many thousands of such stories exist, with words that I can already understand. Who knows where they are!! And then I thought that a computer could easily find any of these texts, news stories, jokes, music videos, anything that contained only words that I know and a few unknown words. Thus was born Bliu Bliu.

In sostanza Bliu Bliu predice il vostro livello di apprendimento delle lingue e poi vi fornisce contenuti da internet che dovreste essere in grado di capire. Ci sono due attività di base.

In essence Bliu Bliu predicts your language level and then provides you with content from the internet that infers you can already understand. There are two basic activities.

Navigare (Surfing). Il programma trova brevi frammenti di testo, di circa 20-50 parole. Le parole che non capite sono sottolineate. Se conoscete una parola sottolineata, cliccate per aggiungere al vostro elenco di “parole che conosci”. Bliu Bliu si adatta al vostro progresso, trovando testi più avanzati  per adattare ai nuovi livelli.

Surfing. The program finds short snippets of text, approximately 20-50 words. The words that you do not understand are underlined. If you know an underlined word, you click on it and add it to your list of  “words that I know”. Bliu Bliu adapts to your progress, finding more advanced texts to fit your new language levels.

Praticare (Drilling). Le parole che non conoscete vi sono mostrate in cinque o più frasi indipendenti. Questo vi incoraggia a dedurre il significato dal contesto del brano.

Drilling. The words that you do not know are shown to you in five or more independent sentences. This encourages you to infer the meaning from the textual content.

Il programma di Bliu Bliu è ancora in fase beta dunque ci sono ancora alcuni problemi tecnici. Un’altra cosa, il programma si concentra sulle singole parole e non sulla grammatica o sulle frasi idiomatiche. Questo potrebbe essere un problema. Però penso che sia un programma valido e che possa essere utile quando è unito con altri modi di apprendimento per rendere l’esperienza più efficace e divertente.

The Bliu Bliu program is still in the Beta phase and therefore there are still some technical issues being ironed out. Another thing, the program focuses on individual words and not on grammar or idiomatic phrases which perhaps could be a problem. But I think it is an interesting program that can be useful when combining it with other language learning methods, making the experience more effective and keeping it fun!

On a side note (or foot note!) Today I just learned that the Studentessa Matta Blog is on Italy Magazine’s 2013 Short List for Best Italy Blogs! I am thrilled and popping my buttons! I invite you to vote for the Matta blog and check out the other top Italy Blogger finalists!
