Ellius Jewelry – made in Arezzo with a passion for history

By Melissa Muldoon

Caspita! Che scoperta!

Last September when I was in Arezzo, the day before the joust, I stumbled upon a small store in via de’ Cenci called “Silvia” named after the owner Silvia Pasquini. In the window I saw she was selling jewelry inspired by the city’s  jousting festival created by an Arentino jewelry company called Ellius. Wow! What a find!

Immediately I entered the store and made friends with Silvia. I was completely enthralled by the jewelry, and I tried on several different rings, earrings and necklaces. A short time later I exited the store having purchased several pieces featuring the Golden Lance and the emblem of the neighborhood I root for—Santo Spirito. Of course! You all know by now I am quite the fan of my team!

The rings, bracelets, earrings, and the necklaces are made by Loren Jewelry and the line of products for the joust have the distinct brand name —Ellius. Each piece is designed by hand by a local artist by name of Fadi Raslan. Each design is a unique piece of Arezzo’s history and captures beautifully the spirit of the joust as well as the town. You can find pieces that relate to each of the four neighborhoods—Porta Santo Spirito; Porta del Foro; Porta Crucifera; and Porta S’Andrea. There are a variety of styles to choose from and among which are symbols peculiar to Arezzo—the golden lance, the town’s street lamps and gates, the jousters on horseback and the burrato the Saracen target.

I absolutely love the jewelry Ellius and I contacted them and also became friends with their representative Valentina Moretti. I am happy to tell you that next fall when I return to Arezzo with my group of immersion students we will have the chance to visit the artisan workshop of Ellius to see how they work to create these interesting pieces of jewelry. Come with me next fall, and we can experience the joust and Arezzo’s amazing community of jewelers!

I wanted to bring you up to date. I learned from Valentina that Silvia’s store no longer offers the Ellius line, but soon there will be other stores in Arezzo that will carry their jewelry. In the meantime, you can find Ellius on-line at https: ellius.com. They also ship to the US and are quite accommodating and very professional This Friday (November 24th) there is a sale, and everything on the site is 30% off.

Soon I will be publishing my second novel called “Waking Isabella” that is set in Arezzo, and the protagonist is a jewelry designer and fan of the joust as well. It seemed fate to have discovered Silvia, her store and make friends with the folks at Ellius.ellius-jewelry-arezzo-giostra-joust

Credetami! Anche voi sarete completamente incantati.

Arezzo is a city where you can find magic around every corner. Where else could I make such a purchase—featuring this unique jewelry— then five minutes later walk up the street and run into these guys making their practice runs in the Piazza Grande? Believe me. You too will be completely enchanted by Arezzo.
