Hello everyone! I’m Melissa – called “the crazy student”. Through podcasts, videos and blog posts and trips and programs in Italy that I organize with schools in Italy, I share curiosities about art, culture… food… boh! I would say… I talk a little about everything that I find interesting about Italy. I also offer tips for learning the language. Che ne dite? Vi piacerebbe festeggiare come i veri Italiani? Bene, in questo episodio parliamo un po’ delle sagre e le feste Italiane… ma in particolare parlerò di una festa che mi ha colpita fin dal inizio—la giostra che si svolge ad Arezzo!

Would you like to celebrate like the real Italians? Well, in this episode, we talk about festivals and celebrations in Italy… In particular, I’m going to talk about and celebration that struck me from the start — the joust that takes place in Arezzo!

Le città italiane in tutta l’Italia festeggiano cerimonie civile e religiose, rievocazioni storici, sagre locali e eventi particolarmente legati ad una città o paese. Se amate l’Italia, come già so l’amate—(dopotutto è la ragione siete qui ad ascolatare e leggere i post sul sito “matta”) —sapete già questo a.

Italian cities throughout Italy celebrate civil and religious festivals, historical re-enactments, local festivals and events particularly linked to a city or country. If you love Italy, as I already know you love it – (after all, this is why you are here reading a post on my “crazy” site) – you already know this.

Ci sono un mucchio di feste, fiere e gare molto particolare! C’è il Palio dei cavalli di Siena e il Palio della rana a Fermignano. Ad Ivrea, nel nord Italia, si lanciano arance l’uno contro l’altro (come si fa) per rievocare una rivalità medievale tra signori e popolani.

There are a lot of unusual events, street fairs, and competitions! There is the Palio di Siena and the Palio della rana in Fermignano. In Ivrea, in northern Italy, oranges are thrown at each other (as is done) to evoke a medieval rivalry between lords and commoners.

A Venezia indossano maschere, scorrazzano e si giocano scherzi durante il carnevale… ricorda a carnevale: ogni scherzo vale! Per dare il benvenuto alla primavera, ad Assisi, l’intero paese si veste con costumi colorati e sfila per la città celebrando Calendimaggio.

In Venice, they wear masks, run around and play jokes during the carnival … remember at carnival: every joke is valid (anything goes)! To welcome spring, in Assisi, the whole town dresses up in colorful costumes and parades around the city celebrating Calendimaggio.

Potrei continuare ad elencare sagre di cibo e feste di santi per giorni! Se guardaste un calendario italiano, vedreste che c’è un evento intrigante quasi ogni giorno in qualche piccola città in ogni angolo del paese. Non solo queste feste sono abbondanti, ma sono accolte calorosamente dalla gente del posto che si veste in costume, prepara montagne di cibo e suona musica per celebrare tutto: maiali, orsi, rane, capre, formaggio, fiori, funghi, aglio, patate… oppure ogni santo nella Bibbia e oltre. In Italia in una festa speciale gli alberi si sposano… per non parlare di una cerimonia che sposa le barche al mare.

I could continue listing sagras and saint celebrations for days! If you were to look at an Italian calendar, you would see a colorful event almost every day in some small town in any corner of the country. Not only are these festivals plentiful, but they are heartily embraced by the locals who dress up in costumes, prepare mountains of food and play music to celebrate everything from pigs, bears, frogs, goats, cheese, flowers, mushrooms, garlic, potatoes, and, or every saint in the bible and beyond. In Italy, even the trees get hitched… not to mention the ceremony that marries boats to the sea.

Ho partecipato a molte di queste feste in Italia, tra cui la sagra del tartufo ad Alba e Ferragosto a Locorotondo e Lecce. Ho portato lanterne di carta durante la festa della Rificolona della Vergine a Firenze e ho mangiato la mia parte di maiale arrosto durante la sagra della porchetta a San Savino.

I have attended many of these “feste” in Italy, including the truffle sagra in Alba and Ferragosto in Locorotondo and Lecce. I’ve carried paper lanterns during the Rificolona festival of the virgin in Florence and eaten my fair share of roasted pig during the porchetta sagra in San Savino.

I’ve happily danced and eaten my way through many local street fairs and festivals (except the sagra of liver — that one I skipped)…

…ma l’evento che spicca su tutti, almeno per me, è la Giostra del Saracino che si svolge ad Arezzo due volte l’anno a giugno e settembre.

…but the one event that stands out above them all, at least for me, is the Giostra del Saracino that occurs in Arezzo twice a year in June and September.

All I can say is… you should experience the Saracen joust in Arezzo to appreciate and understand it well.

Living in Arezzo during the Giostra Saracino is the most immersive experience I have ever encountered in Italy… and that is saying a lot!

Cos’è esattamente la Giostra Saracino? Lasciatemi spiegare!

What is the Joust exactly? Let me explain!

La Giostra risale al Medioevo. È un torneo cavalleresco che si svolge in Piazza Grande. C’è evidenza che esisteva già all’inizio del tredicesima secolo. Dobbiamo solo dare un’occhiata a Dante che parla della giostra ad Arezzo nei sui canti! La giostra nasce in parte come esercitazione militare per le Crociate, e in parte come gioco cavalleresco.

The Giostra di Arezzo dates back to the Middle Ages. It is a knightly tournament that takes place in Piazza Grande, and there is evidence that it already existed at the beginning of the 13th century. In fact, Dante speaks of the carousel in his songs! The joust was born partly as a military exercise for the Crusades, with a target dummy representing the infidel, and partly as a chivalrous game.

Arezzo di solito è una tranquilla cittadina collinare, ma giugno e settembre, si anima di amichevole rivalità di quartiere, bandiere colorate, striscioni sventolanti, e costumi colorati. Ogni rione ha colori distinti, e ogni persona che vive in quella parte della città indossa con orgoglio i suoi colori: Santo Spirito (Blu e Giallo), Porta Sant’Andrea (Verde e Bianco), Porta Crucifera (Rosso e Verde), Porta del Foro (Cremisi e Giallo).

Arezzo is usually a quiet hilltop town, but in June and September comes alive with friendly neighborhood rivalry, colorful flags, waving banners, and colorful costumes. Each district has distinct colors, and each person who lives in that part of the city proudly wears its colors: Santo Spirito (Blue and Yellow), Porta Sant’Andrea (Green and White), Porta Crucifera (Red and Green), Porta of the Forum (Crimson and Yellow).

Una settimana prima della giostra, la musica può essere ascoltata per le strade fino alle piccole ore della notte mentre ogni quartiere celebra i suoi eroi: i cavalieri che si contendono per la Lancia d’oro.

A week before the joust, music can be heard thumping through the streets way into the wee hours of the night as each neighborhood celebrates its heroes—the knights who compete for the Lancia d’oro.

L’eccitazione in città aumenta durante la settimana e raggiunge il culmine la sera prima della giostra con le cene propiziatorie. Ciascuno dei quattro quartieri ospita un grande banchetto all’aperto dove viene servito cibo alla griglia. Durante la cena i tifosi del quartiere ispirano e incoraggiano i loro giostratori. Ci sono discorsi e parole di ringraziamento… musica e balli. Inoltre, ci sono canzoni e canti che esplodono spontaneamente durante il pasto, e non si può fare a meno di farsi prendere dalla frenesia di emozioni gioiose e positive.

The excitement in the city increases during the week and reaches a climax the night before the carousel in the neighborhood’s Propitiatory Dinner. Each of the four neighborhoods hosts a large outdoor banquet serving grilled food. During the dinner, the fans of the neighborhood inspire and encourage their jousters. There are speeches and words of thanks… music, and dancing. What’s more, there are songs and chants that spontaneously explode during the meal, and you can’t help but get caught up in the frenzy of joyful and positive emotions.

Il giorno della giostra, i cannoni vengono sparati per scandire il tempo prima che la folla possa entrare la tribuna in Piazza Grande per prendere posto per assistere all’evento. L’araldo della città percorre il paese a cavallo, invitando tutti a partecipare all’evento. Dietro di lui, marciano soldati vestiti con colori vivaci e cittadini che rappresentano ciascuno dei quattro quartieri, e le nobili antiche famiglie della città. Poi vengono i musicisti, i tamburini e gli sbandieratori. Ultimo ma non meno importante sono i giostratori, tutti vestiti in costume in sella ai loro bellissimi cavalli.

On the day of the joust, canons are fired to mark the time before the crowd is allowed into Piazza Grande to take their seats to watch the event. The city’s herald rides through the town on horseback, inviting everyone to participate in the event. Behind him march colorfully dressed soldiers and townsfolk representing each of the four neighborhoods and the ancient noble families of the town. Behind them come the musicians, the drummers, and the flag throwers. Last but not least are the jousters, all decked out in costume, riding their beautiful horses.

Per aggiornarvi su ciò che accade durante la giostra aretina… ecco i dettagli. Ogni quartiere ha due giostratori che si allenano tutto l’anno a cavallo cercando di colpire un bersaglio con pesanti lance di legno. Durante l’evento vero e proprio che si tiene in Piazza Grande, i giostratori percorrono un sentiero in pendenza chiamata la “lizza” e cercano di segnare il centro del bersaglio tenuto in mano di un manichino oscillante alla fine della pista. La statuina è chiamata il buratto e rappresenta l’intruso saraceno che gli antichi Aretini addestravano a respingere.

To get you up to speed as to what actually happens during Arezzo’s joust… here is the skinny. Each neighborhood has two jousters who train year-round on horseback, trying to hit a target with heavy wooden spears. During the actual event held in Piazza Grande, the jousters walk a sloping path called the “lizza” and try to mark the center of the target held in the hand of a swinging dummy at the end of the track. The figurine is called the “buratto” and represents the Saracen intruder that the ancient Aretini trained to reject.

Durante la gara i punti vengono accumulati dal giostratore quando colpisce il bersaglio diviso in nove sezioni tenuto dal buratto. Tuttavia, l’esito della competizione è incerto fino all’ultimo momento del torneo a causa di improvvisi cambi di fortuna che potrebbero accadere. Ad esempio, se la lancia si rompe dopo aver colpito il saraceno, il punteggio può essere raddoppiato, mentre la caduta della lancia comporterà zero punti. During the competition, the jouster accumulates points when he hits a target divided into nine sections held by the buratto. Still, the outcome of the competition is uncertain until the very last moment of the tournament because of sudden changes in luck that may happen. For instance, if the lance breaks after hitting the Saracen, the score may be doubled, whereas dropping the lance will result in zero points. Points are also lost by a jouster going too slow, or too fast as they risk being whipped by the cat-of-nine-tails that the buratto holds as he swings around on his swiveled perch.

Quando la giostra è finita e il vincitore è dichiarato, le persone del quartiere vincitore salgono in cima alla collina di Arezzo e entra nella cattedrale – San Donato. Arrivano anche i giostrieri, sui loro cavalli, ed è lì che viene consegnata a loro la Lancia d’Oro, il tanto ambito premio della giornata. Altri canti, balli e allegria si svolgono mentre il quartiere vincitore celebra la sua vittoria tutta la notte!

After the joust is over and the winner is declared, the members of the winning neighborhood rush to the top of the Arezzo hill and into the cathedral – San Donato. The jousters also arrive on their horses, and it is there that the Golden Lance, the much-coveted prize of the day, is given to them. More singing, dancing, and merriment unfold as the winning neighborhood celebrates its victory all night long!
