This was an incredibly delightful day! The Studentessa Matta Bookclub met Silvia Zucca the author of “Guida Astrologica per cuori infranti” to discuss her book that inspired the hit Netflix series of the same name!
All’inizio, quando mi è venuta l’idea di fondare un bookclub italiano e ho scelto il libro di Silvia per cominciare, ho scherzato “chi lo sapeva… alla fine forse potremmo anche incontrare l’autore!
In the beginning, when I had this idea to start an Italian book club and I chose Silvia’s book, to begin with, I joked “who knew… at the end perhaps we could even meet the author!”
Cose magiche accadono quando parli italiano!

Ho scritto a Silvia diverse settimane fa ed era molto felice e contenta che gli americani stessero leggendo il suo romanzo (che tra l’altro ora è uno spettacolo di successo su Netflix!) e ha prontamente suggerito che ci incontriamo e oggi ce l’abbiamo fatta!
I wrote to Silvia several weeks ago and she was very happy and pleased that Americans were reading her novel (that, by the way, is now a hit show on Netflix!) e she promptly suggested we meet up, and today we made it happen!
Grazie a tutti le lettrici, dalla California, dalla Florida e dal Texas, che hanno partecipato all’esperienza del Matta Book Club. Direi che è stato un grande successo! Mi sono goduto ogni minuto.

Nel gruppo di giovedì sera c’è Sara Stevenson di Austin, Texas. Entrambe noi abitiamo nella stessa città qui in Texas, lei nel centro e io un po’ più fuori in campagna nelle colline. Ma anche se viviamo pochi passi da l’una l’altra, la prima volta che le nostre strade si sono incrociate, e ci siamo incontrate di persona, è stata il settembre scorso in Italia a Montepulciano. Lei è una bibliotecaria, e viaggia spesso in Italia per studiare alla scuola il Sasso che si trova a Montepulciano la scuola con cui anch’io collaboro per i miei programmi.
In the group on Thursday night is Sara Stevenson from Austin, Texas. We both live in the same town here in Texas, she downtown and I a little further out in the countryside in the hills. But even if we live a few steps from each other, the first time our paths crossed and met in person, was last September in Italy in Montepulciano. She is a librarian, and she often travels to Italy to study at the Sasso school which is located in Montepulciano, the school with which I also collaborate for my programs.
Poi c’è Jackie Maceda di Florida. Il settembre scorso lei ha partecipato nel mio programma a Lucca. Lei è un marketer per una catena di ristoranti, ma lei ha intenzione tra poco di aprire una pasticceria tutta sua. Anche le piace viaggiare in Italia e vuole approfondire il suo italiano.
Then there is Jackie Maceda from Florida. Last September you participated in my program in Lucca. She is a marketer for a restaurant chain, but she plans to open her own patisserie soon. Jackie also likes to travel to Italy and she wants to learn more about her Italian.
E poi c’è Lisa Gazzaniga di California sud — Orange County. Noi due ci incontriamo ogni venerdì per parlare one-on-one. Lei era un’insegnante degli studenti elementari e ha iniziato a studiare l’italiano perché ha conosciuto amici italiani qui in America di origini di Bologna e vuole comunicare meglio con loro.
And then there’s Lisa Gazzaniga from Southern California – Orange County. The two of us meet every Friday to talk one-on-one. She was a teacher of elementary students, and she started studying Italian because she met Italian friends here in America from Bologna, and she wanted to communicate better with them.

All’inizio di gennaio, per la prima volta ho guardato la serie su Netflix ispirata dal libro di Silvia. Ho guardato veloce veloce tutti gli episodi e quando la prima stagione ha concluso con il “cliffhanger,” ero così coinvolta e volevo sapere com’è finita la storia e non avendo la pazienza di aspettare per una stagione 2.
At the beginning of January, I watched the series on Netflix inspired by Silvia’s book for the first time. I watched all the episodes quickly and quickly, and when the first season ended with the “cliffhanger,” I was so involved, and I wanted to know how the story ended and not having the patience to wait for a season 2…

Boh… ma…ad ogni modo volevo sapere perché Davide stava baciando un’altra e che sarebbe successo ad Alice dopo un’altra delusione, sono andata su Amazon in fretta e con molto piacere ho trovato il libro stampato, l’audiobook e anche l’ebook disponibili tutti tre in italiano. Facilissimi da acquistare qui negli stati uniti.
Dunno … but … in any case I wanted to know why Davide was kissing another and what would happen to Alice after another disappointment, I went to Amazon quickly and with great pleasure, I found the printed book, the audiobook, and also the ebook all three available in Italian. Very easy to buy here in the united states.
Ho iniziato ad ascoltare l’audiobook subito— la narratrice Tania de Domenico ha fatto un buon lavoro!Ero così affascinata dallo stile della scrittura e la eccentricità della consegna delle battute, non avevo finito nemmeno il primo capitolo quando è venuta in testa l’idea — questa pazza idea — di organizzare un book club per gli studenti attraverso il mio sito.
I started listening to the audiobook right away – the narrator Tania de Domenico did an excellent job! I was so fascinated by the style of writing and the eccentricity of the delivery of the lines. I hadn’t even finished the first chapter when the idea came to mind – this crazy idea – to organize a book club for students through my site.
Mi ricordo che dopo aver pubblicato la notizia del book club solo poche ore dopo Sara è stata la prima iscritta. Dalla prima settimana di febbraio ci incontriamo ogni settimana. Ci sono otto appuntamenti programmati e questa settimana sarà l’ultimo.
After publishing the news of the book club just a few hours later, I remember that Sara was the first to join. From the first week of February, we meet every week. There are eight appointments scheduled and this week will be the last.
Abbiamo parlato della trama e le battute e tutti i riferimenti coloriti che sono veramente unici e i rapporti tra i personaggi molto speciali, tra Alice e Tio, Alice e Paola, Alice e Mara e Alice e Davide. Alice è qualcuno per cui vuoi fare il tifo… una simpaticona che vuoi come un’amica.
We talked about the plot and the lines and all the colorful references that are truly unique and the relationships between the very special characters, between Alice and Tio, Alice and Paola, Alice and Mara, and Alice and Davide. Alice is someone you want to cheer for … a funny guy you want as a friend.
Mentre leggevo il libro sentivo molto legata non solo ad Alice, ma anche a te Silvia, e il modo in cui tu scrivi… ho pensato che tu saresti stata una persona fantastica di conoscere meglio — specialmente una scrittrice che crea immagini con le parole come queste:
As I read the book, I felt very attached to Alice, but to you too Silvia, and the way you write … I thought you would be a great person to know better – especially a writer who creates images with words like these.

Sono contenta che il lieta fine di Alice sia stato realizzato. Cioè lei è cresciuta fino a diventare una donna forte, indipendente, creativa e che si rende conto finalmente che non ha bisogno di un uomo per sopravvivere
I’m glad Alice’s happy ending has come true. That is, she has grown to be a strong, independent, creative woman who finally realizes that she doesn’t need a man to survive.
Ma il mio lato romantico è felice anche per l’epilogo — Davide torna alla fine (anche se è stato un uomo stupido per averla lasciata scivolare via nel primo luogo) e finalmente può essere aperta con lei ed esprimersi i sentimenti che prova per Alice.
But my romantic side is happy with the epilogue, too – Davide comes back at the end (even though he was a stupid man for letting her slip away in the first place), and finally he can be open to her and express his feelings for Alice.
Brava, complimenti. Ben fatto. Brava, congratulations. Well done.
