Sto scaricando audiolibri italiani da ascoltare mentre faccio passeggiate o faccio yoga. È un modo meraviglioso per praticare l’ascolto e aumentare il vocabolario. Più recentemente, ho ascoltato un romanzo di Susanna Tamaro dal titolo “Una grande storia d’amore.” Tamaro è un popolare romanziere italiana nata a Trieste che ha studiato alla Sperimentale di Cinematografia, diplomandosi in regia. Per dieci anni ha lavorato in televisione realizzando documentari scientifici. I suoi libri hanno venduto milioni di copie in Italia e sono stati tradotti in tutto il mondo.
I’ve been downloading Italian audiobooks to listen to while I go for walks and do yoga. It is a wonderful way to practice Italian listening skills and increase your vocabulary. Most recently, I listened to a novel by Susanna Tamaro called“Una grande storia d’amore.” Tamaro is a popular Italian novelist born in Trieste who studied at the Sperimentale di Cinematografia, graduating in film directing. For ten years, she worked in television making scientific documentaries. She has sold millions of books in Italy that have been translated to be enjoyed by readers worldwide.

“Una grande storia d’amore” di Susanna Tamaro racconta la storia di Edith, una giovane ribelle bohémien, tenacemente aggrappata alla sua indipendenza, non interessata a convenzioni sociali come il matrimonio. È anche la storia di Andrea, un uomo dieci anni più vecchio di Edith, che mantiene una vita ben ordinata, è disciplinato, e che proviene da una famiglia rigida, aristocratica.
“Una grande storia d’amore” by Susanna Tamaro tells the story of Edith, a young bohemian rebel, fiercely holding on to her independence, not interested in societal conventions such as marriage. It is also the story of Andrea, a man ten years older than Edith, who keeps a well-ordered life, is disciplined, and who comes from a rigid, aristocratic family.

The two meet when Edith is still in university studying languages, and Andrea, captain of a traghetto transports people between Venezia and Greece.
Edith è uno dei molti passeggeri che Andrea, deve proteggere durante il viaggio, una responsabilità che si prende a cuore. Ma invece di apprezzare il suo ruolo di “protettore” Edith è scortese e sgradevole ad Andrea, ritenendolo vecchio e soffocante. D’altra parte, lui pensa che lei sia l’ultima persona al mondo che avrebbe mai voluto sposare.
Edith is one of the many passengers he must protect during the voyage, a responsibility he takes to heart. But instead of appreciating his role of “protector”, Edith is rude and unpleasant to Andrea, thinking him old and stuffy. On the other hand, he thinks that she is the last person in the world he would ever want to marry.
La storia dello strano rapporto tra di loro, che ci porta da quel momento sul traghetto fino alla vecchiaia, è raccontata dal punto di vista di Andrea in una serie di flashback. Viviamo il dolore e la malinconia di Andrea quando Edith entra nella sua vita, rimane per un po’, e poi se ne va. Ancora, pazientemente Andrea aspetta che Edith torni da lui. E come succede tante volte prima lei torna e la loro vita insieme va in avanti di nuovo, ma senza alcun impegno formale. Vivono insieme compiaciuti, vivendo momenti di felicità e momenti di profonda tristezza.
The story of the strange relationship between them that takes them from that moment until old age and death is told from Andrea’s point of view in a series of flashbacks. We live through Andrea’s heartache, pain, and melancholy as Edith comes into his life, stays for a while, and then leaves. Still, patiently Andrea waits for Edith to return to him. As has happened many times in the past she returns and their life together continues again, without any formal commitment. They live complacently together, experiencing moments of happiness and moments of profound sadness.
Per la maggior parte del libro, l’esistenza solitaria di Andrea è sottolineata dalla solitudine che sopporta vivendo su un’isola, lontano dalle persone, circondato dalle alte e basse maree, dal vento, dagli uccelli, dalle api e dal passare delle stagioni. Edith ritorna per sempre, ma il destino la porta via di nuovo da lui. Ancora una volta, Andrea è in attesa, chiedendosi se loro due si incontreranno al di là. Nonostante il suo dolore, si rivolge pragmaticamente al business della vita e prendersi cura della figlia di Edith. Una giovane ragazza smarrita che ha bisogno della sua presenza solida.
For most of the book, Andrea’s lonely existence is underscored by the solitude he endures living on an island, far away from people, surrounded by the sea—high and low tides, the wind, the birds, the bees, and the passing of the seasons. Edith returns for good, but fates take her away from him again. Once again, Andrea is left again waiting, wondering where and when and if they will meet again. Despite his grief, he pragmatically turns to the business of life and taking care of Edith’s child. A young girl, who wandered astray and needs his solid presence.
Lo stile della narrativa e la storia raccontata dalla prospettiva di Andrea erano intriganti. Tuttavia, ero infastidita dalla sua pazienza instancabile in attesa di Edith e dalla sua volontà di riprendersela. D’altra parte, Edith mi infastidiva perché sembrava volubile, egoista e sconsiderata. E nonostante siano stati separati per la maggior parte dei loro anni, hanno continuato a cercarsi l’un l’altro e hanno vissuto una vita insolita insieme.
The styling of the narrative and the story told from Andrea’s perspective were intriguing. However, I was annoyed at his unflagging patience in waiting for Edith and his willingness to take her back. On the other hand, Edith annoyed me because she seemed flighty, selfish, and inconsiderate. And despite being separated for most of their years, they continued to seek each other out and experienced an unusual life together.
