Trentino è una regione italiana anche chiamata Südtirol. È una zona tranquilla nel cuore delle dolomiti.

It is a quiet area in the heart of the dolomites.

La città di Trento è situata nella valle del fiume Adige e mantiene un legame molto stretto con le montagne. In particolare, ci sono tre monti—Bondone, Calisio, e Marzolo—che circondano la città. ll nome di Trento viene dal latino—Tridentum (trident)—assegnato dai Romani che vuol dire “città dei tre denti.”

The city of Trento is located in the valley of the Adige river and maintains a very close link with the mountains. In particular, there are three mountains—Bondone, Calisio, and Marzolo— that surround the city. The name of Trento comes from the Latin—Tridentum (trident)—assigned by the Romans which means “city of the three teeth.”

Trento era un importante snodo viario durante l’epoca dei imperatori romani. Era la principale via militare verso nord. Per questo col tempo la zona fu invasa dai barbari. Prima dai Longobardi dal Germania, poi Trento venne occupata dai Goti, e Franchi. Nel medioevale fu un centro per minerario. Tra 1545 e il 1563 Trento fu sede del Concilio che avviò la controriforma. In quegli anni la città divenne una vera e propria capitale europea con corti e delegazioni da tutta la Cristianità.

Trento was an important road junction during the era of the Roman emperors. It was the main military route to the north. For this reason, over time the area was invaded by the barbarians. First by the Lombards from Germany, then Trento was occupied by the Goths and the Franks. In the Middle Ages, it was a center for mining. Between 1545 and 1563 Trento was the seat of the Council that initiated the Counter-Reformation. In those years the city became a real European capital with courts and delegations from all over Christianity.

Negli anni a cavallo tra Settecento e Ottocento la città passò prima ai francesi e poi agli Asburgo. A metà dell’ottocento venne costruita la nuova ferrovia del Brennero che congiunge Innsbruck a Verona.

In the years between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the city passed first to the French and then to the Habsburgs. In the mid-nineteenth century, the new Brenner railway was built linking Innsbruck to Verona.

Trento divenne italiana solo dopo la prima guerra mondiale (1918). Nel 1947 l’Assemblea costituente istituì la Regione autonoma a statuto speciale Trentino-Alto Adige. Oggi, capoluogo amministrativo, sede di università e istituti di ricerca, ricca di iniziative culturali e spettacoli.

Trento became Italian only after the First World War (1918). In 1947 the Constituent Assembly established the Autonomous Region with a special Trentino-Alto Adige statute. Today, the administrative capital, home to universities and research institutes, full of cultural initiatives and shows.

I’d like to tell you about the legend of Monti Pallidi

Le Dolomiti sono conosciute anche come Monti Pallidi a seguito di un prodigioso incantesimo avvenuto al tempo del Regno delle Dolomiti. Un regno ricoperto di prati fioriti, boschi lussureggianti e laghi incantati. Ovunque si poteva respirare aria di felicità e armonia meno che nel castello reale.

The Dolomites are also known as the Pale Mountains following a prodigious spell that occurred at the time of the Kingdom of the Dolomites. A kingdom covered with flowery meadows, lush forests and enchanted lakes. Everywhere you could breathe an air of happiness and harmony except in the royal castle.

Secondo la leggenda, il figlio del re aveva sposato la principessa della luna, ma un triste destino condannava i due giovani amanti a vivere eternamente separati.

According to legend, the king’s son had married the moon princess, but a sad fate condemned the two young lovers to live eternally apart.

Perché? L’uno non poteva sopportare l’intensa luce della luna che l’avrebbe reso cieco; l’altra sfuggiva la vista delle cupe montagne e dei fitti boschi che le causavano una malinconia talmente profonda da farla ammalare gravemente.

Why? The one could not bear the intense light of the moon that would have made him blind; the other escaped the sight of the dark mountains and thick woods that caused her a melancholy so deep that it made her seriously ill.

Sembrava che la vecchia armonia, che da sempre aveva contraddistinto quel meraviglioso regno, era ormai un lontano ricordo.

It seemed that the old harmony, which had always characterized that wonderful kingdom, was now a distant memory.

Il principe sconsolato vagava per i boschi di quelle alte montagne. Proprio in quei boschi abitavano anche strane creature capaci di straordinarie magie: erano in grado di cambiare il corso degli eventi.

The disconsolate prince wandered through the woods of those high mountains. In those woods also lived strange creatures capable of extraordinary magic: they were able to change the course of events.

Così un giorno, nel suo disperato vagare, il principe si imbatté nel re dei Salvani, un piccolo e simpatico gnomo in cerca di una terra per il suo popolo.

So one day, in the desperate wanderings of him, the prince ran into the king of the Salvani, a friendly little gnome looking for a land for his people.

Dopo aver ascoltato la triste storia del giovane, il re dei Salvani gli propose, in cambio del permesso di abitare con la propria gente questi boschi, di rendere lucenti le montagne del suo regno.

After listening to the sad story of the young man, the king of the Salvani proposed to him, in exchange for the permission to live in these woods with his people, to make the mountains of his kingdom shine.

Così fu: dopo una lunga notte di lavoro, gli gnomi riuscirono a catturare tutta la bianca luce della luna e con essa ricoprirono ogni centimetro delle montagne.

So it was: after a long night of work, the gnomes managed to capture all the white light of the moon and with it covered every inch of the mountains.

La principessa poté così tornare sulla terra per vivere felicemente assieme al suo sposo e le Dolomiti presero il nome di Monti Pallidi.

The princess was thus able to return to earth to live happily with her husband and the Dolomites took the name of Monti Pallidi—the pale peaks.
