Incontro Italiano! Ways to Practice your Italian. Facciamo due chiacchiere.

La domenica scorsa, il mio amico Rick che — abita pochi passi da me veramente dietro l’angolo — ed io abbiamo organizzato un incontro italiano. Abbiamo invitato gli amici che abitano vicino a noi nel nostro piccolo paese nella periferia di San Francisco e anche gli amici che conosciamo in città. Volevamo cogliere l’occasione per chiacchierare in Italiano con gli amici che non abbiamo visto da un po’ e condividere le ultime notizie dopo le feste.

Last Sunday, my friend Rick — who lives close by really just around the corner — and I we organized an Italian meet-up. We invited friends who live near us in our small town outside of San Francisco and a bunch of friends who live in the city. We wanted to take this opportunity to chat in Italiano and catch up on the latest news with our friends whom we hadn’t seen in a while and share the latest news with one another since the holidays.

Sono stata molto contenta che tante persone abiano attraversato il ponte per trovarci. Siamo situati nel sud Bay tra Oakland e San Jose. Da San Francisco ci vogliono almeno quaranta minuti in macchina per raggiungerci a Fremont. Quindi è un po’ impegnativo per gli abitanti delle città. Tra la gente c’erano amici italiani—madralingua—e anche quelli che stanno imparando italiano da livello principiante ad avanzato. In somma è stato una grand miscela delle voci e una bella opportunità di esercitare la lingua, per incontrare vecchi amici e conoscere nuova gente.

I’m quite pleased that so many people crossed the bridge to join us. We are located in the South Bay between Oakland and San Jose. From San Francisco, it takes about forty minutes by car to reach us here in Fremont. So it is quite a haul for the friends who are city dwellers. Among the crowd were Italian friends – native speakers — and also those learning the language from beginners to advanced. All in all, there was a great mixture of voices and a wonderful opportunity to practice the language, see old friends and meet new people.

Il mio consiglio: cercate un Meet-up group vicino a voi per incontrare gente simpatica per fare conversazione. È facile trovare gruppi come nostro sul sito di Meet-up. Infatti alcuni anni fa Rick ed io ci siamo incontrati in un Meet-up group a Palo Alto. È stato molto buffo quando ci siamo accorti che eravamo proprio vicini di casa! A quel punto abbiamo deciso di creare un gruppo informale tutto nostro più vicino a noi. Qualche volta abbiamo un mente un tema per i nostri incontri…come guardare un film o discutere un argomento specifico…ma di solito tutti vogliono solo bere, mangiare e chiacchiare e alla fine non abbiamo tempo per fare nient altro! Comunque è sempre divertente.

My advice is to look for a Meet-up group near you to meet like-minded individuals to practice your Italian conversation. It is easy to find groups like ours on the Meet-up site. In fact, a few years ago Rick and I met through a Meet-up group. It was really funny when we realized we were practically neighbors and it was then we decided to form our own informal group in our own city. Sometimes we try to have a theme for our meetings…like watching a film or talking about a specific topic…but usually, everyone just wants to drink, eat and chat…and we end up only doing that. Regardless…it is always fun.
