Buone notizie per Arezzo! Anche se quest’anno la Giostra del Saracino è stata annullata… gli Aretini festeggiano l’apertura
di un nuovo museo
dedicato alla Giostra.

celebrating the opening of a new museum
dedicated to the Giostra Saracino.

Il 6 agosto 2020, dopo tre anni di lavoro di restyling e implementazione, abbiamo inaugurato il percorso espositivo “I Colori della Giostra.”
On August 6, 2020, after three years of restyling and implementation, Arezzo inaugurated the exhibition “I Colori della Giostra.”
Inizialmente, il museo è stato inaugurato nel 2016 in seguito al restauro di un piccolo gruppo di costumi disegnati nel 1952 da Nino Vittorio Novrese. I lavori sono stati eseguiti per volere dell’Assessore alla Giostra G. Gamurrini, in collaborazione con il Liceo Artistico Piero della Francesca.
Initially, the museum was opened in 2016 following the restoration of a small group of costumes designed in 1952 by Nino Vittorio Novrese. The work was carried out at the behest of the Councilor for the Giostra G. Gamurrini, in collaboration with the Liceo Artistico Piero della Francesca.
Più di recente, visto l’enorme numero di visitatori—200.000 partecipanti!—si è deciso di ampliare il progetto. Guidato da me, Laura Folli, la Restauratrice di Tessili Antichi, con l’aiuto di stagisti e della gente di Arezzo la mostra originale è stata arricchita per includere molto di più!
More recently, given the significant number of visitors—200,000 attendees!— it was decided to expand the project. Led by me, Laura Folli, the Restorer of Ancient Textiles, with the help of interns and the people of Arezzo the original exhibit has been enhanced to include much more!
Il museo di nuova concezione è ora aperto e presenta manufatti, foto, lance e costumi. Soprattutto, conserva la storia della Giostra del Saracino che si rappresenta due volte l’anno ad Arezzo, e la spiega in modo affascinante e interattivo ai visitatori.
The newly designed museum is now open and features artifacts, photos, lances, costumes. Most importantly, it preserves the history of the Joust of the Saracino that happens twice a year in Arezzo, and explains it in a fascinating and interactive way to visitors.
In una sala si possono vedere le lance d’oro vinte dai quartieri nella prima manifestazione del 1931. Francesco Conti, maestro scultore di lance, ha anche fornito una nuova lancia esposta nel museo, che sarà utilizzata nella Giostra del 2031.
In one hall, you can see the gold lances won by the neighborhoods in the first event in 1931. Francesco Conti, master lance carver, has also created a new lance exhibited in the museum, which will be used in the Giostra in 2031.
In altre sale i visitatori potranno assistere a tutti i tipi di memorabilia della giostra: il libro del cancelliere, il mazzafrusto del buratto, l’originale testa antica del Buratto (che fino ad ora era conservata nell’Archivio di Stato di Arezzo), noncheé costumi, lance e fotografie degli eventi passati.
In other rooms, visitors will be treated to all kinds of joust memorabilia—the chancellor’s book, the Buratto’s cat-o-nine-tails, the original ancient head of the Buratto (which up to now was kept in the State Archives of the Arezzo) as well restored costumes, lances, and photographs of past events..
A guidare i visitatori attraverso la mostra ci sono touch screen computerizzati che forniscono le informazioni sia in italiano che in inglese.
To guide the visitors through the exhibit, there are computerized touch screens that communicate information both in Italian and English.
Un tocco speciale nella sala dedicata alle lance è il display rotante con la Lancia d’Oro. È anche possibile impugnare una vera e propria lancia usata dai giostratori durante la manifestazione. C’è anche un bellissimo pannello decorato a mano che mostra tutte le vittorie dei quattro quartieri. Un’altra novità divertente è una sella di legno al centro della stanza, dove è possibile simulare la carriera come un vero giostratore grazie ai visori ottici a disposizione!
A crowning touch in hall dedicated to the lances is the rotating display featuring the Lancia d’Oro—the golden lance. It is also possible to hold an actual lance the jousters use during the event. There is also a beautiful hand-decorated panel that displays all the victories of the four neighborhood districts. Another fun innovation is a wooden saddle in the middle of the room, where it is possible to simulate the jouster’s run up the track thanks to a virtual optical headpiece. Also, using this device, the viewer can immerse himself in the middle of the square during the joust.
Nell’ultima stanza è possibile provare un’emozionante esperienza attraverso un cortometraggio. All’interno di questa sala, il visitatore può vivere la giostra come se fosse lì, ammirando i costumi incredibili, il corteo storico e l’emozione accresciuta che rende questo evento così speciale.
Featured in the last room is a thrilling short movie experience. Inside this room, the visitor can experience the jousting event as if he were there taking in the lovely costumes, historic parade, and the heightened emotion that makes this event so very special.
Alla fine della mostra, c’è un negozio di articoli da regalo dove è possibile acquistare oggetti speciali creati dagli artigiani di Arezzo. Nell’offerta sono comprese le ceramiche fatte e dipinte a mano di Andrea Roggi, le tele multimateriali e le cartoline acquarellate di Laura Ghezzi e le sciarpe tessute da me, Laura Folli, ispirate alle bandiere di Arezzo, oltre ai gioielli a tema Giostra.
At the end of the exhibit, there is a lovely gift store where you can buy specialty items created by Arezzo’s artisans. Included in the offering are Andrea Roggi’s hand-made and hand-painted ceramics, Laura Ghezzi’s multi-material canvases and watercolor postcards, and Laura Folli’s woven scarves inspired by Arezzo’s flags, as well as Giostra themed jewelry.
Ovviamente tra le proposte creative ci sono i libri di Melissa— “Waking Isabella / Il Risveglio di Isabella” in italiano e inglese—ambientati ad Arezzo che raccontano la storia, la giostra e le leggende di Arezzo. Sono disponibile anche le sue sciarpe disegnante a mano con lo skyline di Piazza Grande di Arezzo.
Obviously, a.mong the creative offerings are Melissa’s books—Waking Isabella in Italian and English—set in Arezzo that tell of Arezzo’s history, joust and legends. Her hand designed scarves featuring the skyline of Arezzo’s Piazza Grande are also available.
Prima di uscire, i visitatori sono invitati a firmare un guest book e hanno una foto fatto in un foto booth decorato a mano da me e Laura Ghezzi con le immagine di una dame e paggio con abbigliamenti caratteristici—gonna in velluto, acconciatura, stivali e cintura di pelle!
Before leaving, visitors are invited to sign a guest book and have a photo taken in a hand-decorated photo booth by me and Laura Ghezzi with the image of a lady and page with characteristic attire—velvet skirt, hairdo, boots, and leather belt!
