Writing a letter to Sophia Loren and she responds! Sono al settimo ceilo!

Alcuni anni fa, mentre scrivevo il mio primo romanzo “Dreaming Sophia”, ho avuto l’estremo piacere di incontrare di persona la signorina Sophia Loren. Avevo quasi finito con il romanzo quando ho saputo che stava dando uno spettacolo personale a Las Vegas in cui avrebbe parlato della sua vita e carriera.

A few years ago, when I was writing my first novel, “Dreaming Sophia,” I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Miss Sophia Loren in person. I was almost done with the novel when I learned she was giving a one-woman show in Las Vegas in which she was to speak about her life and career.

I met Sophia Loren in person and spoke to her in Italian.

Poiché La Loren è un personaggio principale della mia storia, ho capito subito che dovevo trovare un modo per incontrarla di persona. In retrospettiva, sembra un po’ audace, ma al quel momento ero imperterrito. Così deciso ad incontrare la signora Loren, (anche se vivevo a San Francisco e l’evento si sarebbe tenuto a Las Vegas) ho chiamato il locale e ho parlato con un manager e gli ho spiegato chi ero e il mio progetto. Era molto comprensivo e dopo avermi ascoltato divagare per un po’, alla fine mi ha informato che dopo lo spettacolo, la signorina Loren avrebbe avuto un ricevimento privato per ospiti VIP selezionati. Mi disse inoltre che gli era rimasto un solo biglietto VIP e che era il mio! Sembrava kismet e ho accettato con gratitudine il biglietto che mi ha offerto!

As La Loren is a principal character in my story, I knew I had to find a way to meet her in person. In retrospect, it seems a bit audacious, but at the time, I was undaunted. So bent on meeting Ms. Loren (even though I lived in San Francisco and the event was to be held in Las Vegas), I called the venue, talked to a manager, and explained who I was and my project. He was very sympathetic, and after listening to me ramble on for a bit, he finally informed me that Miss Loren would be holding a private reception for select VIP guests after the show. He further told me he had only one VIP ticket and that it was mine! It seemed kismet and I gratefully accepted the ticket he offered me!

Ed è così che mi sono trovato faccia a faccia e guancia a guancia con Sophia Loren! Durante il ricevimento di champagne dopo lo spettacolo, ho avuto l’opportunità di parlare in privato con lei in italiano, baciarla su entrambe le guance e raccontarle il mio romanzo. Abbiamo anche fatto una foto insieme.

And that is how I came face to face and cheek to cheek with Sophia Loren! During the champagne reception after the show, I had the opportunity to speak privately with her in Italian, kiss her on both cheeks, and tell her about my novel. We also had a photo taken together.

“Believe in your dreams, dreams become reality.”

Durante il nostro incredibile incontro, ho trovato la signorina Loren accogliente e affascinante. Era anche autoironica e incredibilmente gentile. Quella sera c’erano due cose che ha detto che mi risuonavano. Il primo: “Credi nei tuoi sogni, i sogni diventano realtà”. Il secondo: “Sii coraggioso. Fallo e basta.” Queste due idee sono la premessa del mio libro “Dreaming Sophia”, quindi, naturalmente, sentire Sophia Loren dirlo ad alta voce mi ha fatto venire la pelle d’oca e mi ha fatto battere forte il cuore!

During our lovely encounter, I found Miss Loren warm and charming. She was also self-deprecating and incredibly gracious. That evening there were two things she said that resonated with me. The first: is “Believe in your dreams; dreams become a reality.” The second: “Be brave. Just do it.” These two ideas are the premise of my first book, so of course, to hear Sophia Loren say this out loud gave me goosebumps and made my heart pound faster!

Dopo aver pubblicato il mio secondo libro Waking Isabella, una mia amica italiana, che mi ha aiutato con molti dei miei progetti, ha continuato a tormentarmi a scrivere a Sophia Loren e condividere con lei i miei libri pubblicati. L’idea mi piaceva, ma ero anche titubante e mi sentiva un po’ sopraffatta dalla prospettiva.

After publishing my second book Waking Isabella, an Italian friend who has helped me with many of my projects, kept pestering me to write to Sophia Loren and share my published books with her. I liked the idea but was also hesitant and felt a little overwhelmed by the prospect.

A questo punto, tutti quanti voi state dicendo: Melissa? La nostra Studentessa Matta? Timida? Lo so… lo so… eppure è vero!

At this point, you are all saying – Melissa? Our Studentessa Matta? Timid? Shy? I know… I know… yet it is true!

Ma … ogni volta che vedevo la mia amica, continuava a dirmi di scrivere la lettera e di inviare a Sophia i miei libri. Quindi, finalmente, alla fine di gennaio 2018, l’ho fatto! Ho inviato alla signorina Loren una lettera che ho scritto in italiano (e ho anche dato il Lei!) E l’ho spedita insieme ai miei due libri.

But…every time I saw my friend, she kept telling me to write a letter and send Sophia my books. So, finally, at the end of January 2018, I did! I sent Miss Loren a letter I wrote in Italian (and even used the Lei form!) and sent it along with my two books.

L’Italia mi ha cambiato la vita! Volevo che Sophia lo sapesse.

Italy has changed my life! I wanted Sophia to know this.

Alla fine, ho capito che era molto importante ringraziarla per essere stata un’ispirazione, non solo per il personaggio del mio libro ma anche per me personalmente. La Loren rappresenta l’Italia e grazie al mio entusiasmo per questo paese speciale, sono stata portata al punto in cui sono ora – collegata a così tante persone meravigliose con opportunità che non avrei mai pensato possibili. L’Italia mi ha cambiato la vita! Volevo che Sophia lo sapesse.

In the end, I realized it was very important to thank her for being an inspiration, not only for the character in my book but for me personally as well. La Loren represents Italy, and because of my enthusiasm for this special country, I have been brought to the point where I am now – connected to so many wonderful people with opportunities I never thought possible. Italy has changed my life! I wanted Sophia to know this.

Non mi sarei mai aspettato di ricevere una risposta, ma verso la fine di febbraio, quando sono andata alla cassetta delle lettere e ho trovato una busta colore di crema con un indirizzo stampato a mano e un timbro postale della Svizzera, ho subito capito che Sophia mi aveva risposto. 

I never expected to receive a response, but toward the end of February, when I went to the mailbox and found a heavy cream stock envelope with a hand-printed address and a postmark from Switzerland — I instantly knew Sophia had written me back.

Sono al settimo cielo!

I’m in seventh heaven!

È una sensazione molto soddisfacente e gratificante che il mio lavoro abbia le benedizioni e l’inoraggiamento di Sophia Loren! È davvero una sensazione magica. Sono al settimo cielo!

It is a very satisfying and rewarding feeling knowing my work has the blessings and encouragement of Sophia Loren! It is a magical feeling. I’m in seventh heaven!
