3 Things the folks in Montepulciano like best about their little town in Tuscany

A giugno vado a Montepulciano per trascorrere due settimane lì con il prossimo programma di Language Immersion. Avendo passato alcuni giorni in questa piccola città in Toscana la scorsa estate, per conoscere la città e gli insegnanti alla scuola Il Sasso, dove studieremo, sto anticipando un’altra meravigliosa esperienza. Il nostro gruppo è già al completa! Con me in questo viaggio ci saranno TRE studenti che hanno viaggiato con me prima, poi ci sono altri nuove persone.

In June I’m headed to Montepulciano to spend two weeks there with my next language immersion group. Having spent a few days in this small Tuscan hill town last summer, getting to know the town and the teachers at Il Sasso, the school where we will be studying, I’m anticipating another wonderful experience. Our group is fully booked! With me, on this trip, there will be THREE students who have traveled with me before, plus a lot of new faces.

Per prepararci, ho pensato che sarebbe stato divertente sentire dalle persone che vivono a Montepucliano per sapere alcune delle cose che amano della loro città. Ecco alcuni dei miei amici, Sara, Heike, Gaia, Gianni e Silvia che vorrebbero condividere le cose che a loro piacciono di più.

To get us ready, I thought it would be fun to hear from the people who live in Montepulciano to find out some of the things they like about their town. Here are some of my friends, Sara, Heike, Gaia, Gianni and Silvia who would like to share with you what they like best.

Sara

A Montepulciano adoro ammirare il tramonto che si tinge di rosa da Piazza San Francesco nelle serate estive; sedermi sugli scalini di Piazza Grande tra  bellissimi edifici in travertino costruiti in epoca Rinascimentale e respirare la loro storia.

In Montepulciano, I love to admire the sunset that tinges Piazza San Franceso a rosy pink on a summer evening; sitting on the steps of the Piazza Grande among the beautiful buildings built of travertine that date back to the Renaissance and exude its history.

Vivere l’atmosfera del Bravìo delle Botti, la sfida che si disputa ogni anno nel paese tra le 8 contrade di Montepulciano  l’ultima domenica di Agosto in onore del santo patrono.

Experiencing the Bravìo delle Botti, the challenge that is played out every year in our town, the last Sunday in August in which the 8 districts of Montepulciano honor the city’s patron saint.

Parate storiche, spettacoli di funamboli,  tamburini e sbandieratori, cene nelle taverne con i piatti tipici toscani, animano in modo eccezionale la vita della città.

The historical parades, performances by tightrope walkers, drummers, and flag-wavers, dinners in the local taverns with typical Tuscan dishes, all these things enliven the town in an exceptional way.

Heike

Mi piace mangiare bene! E in particolare mi piacciono i pici, i grossi spaghetti irregolari fatti a mano che sono nati proprio da queste parti. Si mangiano all’aglione, un sugo piccante di aglio e pomodoro, al ragù di chianina o di cinghiale o, più semplicemente, con un condimento di briciole di pane fritte nell’olio di oliva prodotto in queste colline e aromatizzate con l’aglio.

I like to eat well! And in particular, I like pici pasta, the large irregular spaghetti made by hand that was born right here. You eat them with a sauce called “aglione,” a spicy sauce made with garlic and tomatoes, chianina or wild boar ragù, or more simply, with a few sprinkles of breadcrumbs fried in olive oil that is produced in the hills around the town that has been flavored with garlic.

Dove mangiare? A Montepulciano c’è l’imbarazzo della scelta! Fra i ristoranti che mi piacciono di più ci sono La Grotta, Pane, Vino & Zucchero e Le Logge del Vignola. Ognuno di loro ha qualcosa di speciale, ma li unisce la passione che gli chef mettono nella realizzazione dei loro piatti.

Where to eat? In Montepulciano, we are really spoiled! Among the restaurant that I like the most, there are “La Grotta,” “Vino & Zucchero” and “Le Logge del Vignola.” Each of them has something special and reflects the passion of each individual chef.

Mi piace tanto l’atmosfera di festa che si respira alla fine di agosto, quando si corre il Bravìo delle Botti, la famosa gara fra contrade i cui spingitori fanno rotolare una botte (no, non è piena!) fino in Piazza Grande. E la sera, tutti a festeggiare nella contrada vincitrice!

I really like the party atmosphere that you can enjoy at the end of August when there is the Bravìo delle Botti, the famous race between the neighborhood districts who compete by pushing a wine barrel (no, it’s not full!) up the hill into the Piazza Grande. And in the evening, everyone celebrates the winning team.

Gianni direttore del teatro di Montepulciano

Mi piace il Museo Civico e le opere che custodisce, in particolare la Madonna del Sodoma, il San Francesco di Margaritone d’Arezzo, la Madonna del Signorelli.

I like the Civic Museum and the works that it contains, especially the Madonna del Dodoma, the San Francesco of Margaritone d’Arezzo, and the Madonna del Signorelli.

Mi piacciono i i pici all’aglione della Trattoria di Cagnano.

Infine il Lago di Montepulciano; mi piace perché è un’oasi di silenzio che amplifica i suoni della natura: il vento, l’acqua, gli uccelli, gli insetti…

Finally the Lake of Montepulciano; I like it because it is an oasis of silence that amplifies the sounds of nature: wind, water, birds, insects…

Le tre cose che mi piacciono di più della mia città….non è difficile!

The three things I like most about my city…it isn’t all that difficult!

Mi piace camminare verso la chiesa di San Biagio nella luce del mattino, quando ancora sono pochi i rumori che turbano la quiete della campagna, e la cupola i questo perfetto edificio rinascimentale si delinea contro il profilo del cielo.

I like walking towards the church of San Biagio in the morning light when there isn’t much noise to disturb the quiet of the countryside, and the dome of this perfect Renaissance building is outlined against the profile of the sky.

Mi piace bere un bicchiere di vino bianco sulla terrazza del Lucevan Le Stelle la sera d’estate fra le 7 e le 8, quando il sole che tramonta tinge di rosso l’orizzonte.

I like drinking a glass of white wine on the terrace of the Lucevan Le Stelle on summer evenings between 7 and 8 when the setting sun turns the horizon red.

E infine mi piace attraversare Piazza Grande quando, in inverno, completamente vuota, è immersa nella nebbia o spazzata dal vento.

And finally, I like to cross Piazza Grande, when in winter it is completely empty and it is immersed in the mist or is swept clean by the wind.
