Sono tornata dall’Italia per poco più di un mese. Questa volta, invece di tornare in California, la mia casa di vent’tanni, ho preso un volo diretto da Roma ad Austin, Texas. La mattina dopo il mio ritorno negli Stati Uniti, il camion di trasloco si è presentato e abbiamo iniziato il processo di riempire la nostra casa, recentemente costruita a Lakeway, nella campagna collinare appena fuori dalla città.
I’ve been back from Italy for a little over a month. This time instead of flying to California, my home of twenty years, I flew straight from Rome to Austin, Texas. The morning after I arrived in the States, the moving van showed up, and we began the process of moving into our newly constructed home in Lakeway in the hill country just outside of the city.

Durante le ultime settimane, sono stata molto impegnata, disimballando e sistemando la nostra nuova casa. Diversi mesi fa, ho eliminato tutte le cose non essenziali che ho tenuto per sempre e ho racchiuso solo le cose che erano importanti alla nostra famiglia. Durante l’estate abbiamo vissuto come zingari — con solo le valigie. Ora è bello vedere i tesori che ho raccolto durante i miei viaggi in Italia e nel mondo!
During the past several weeks, I have been super busy, unpacking, and setting up our new home. Several months ago, I weeded out all the nonessentials things I’ve been holding onto forever and boxed up only the things that were important to our family. During the summer, we lived literally like gypsies — out of suitcases. Now it feels good to see the treasures I’ve collected during my travels to Italy and around the world!

I’m an artist and a curator.
L’artista in me si diletta nel decorare con colori, luci e tessuti. La casa è come una grande tela su cui ho dipinto ampiamente! Dall’altra parte, mi sento anche come un curatore del museo. Ogni oggetto ha una memoria o una storia speciale, quindi è stata una bella esperienza vedere di nuovo quadri dipinti da amici o da me, toccare piatti in ceramica colorata e ammirare nuovi raggruppamenti e composizioni di mobili.
The artist in me delights in decorating with color, light, and textures. The house is like a giant canvas on which I’ve been painting broadly! On the other hand, I also feel like a museum curator. Each object has a special memory or story, so it has been a lovely experience to reconnect with pictures painted by friends or by me, touch colorful ceramic plates, and admire new groupings and arrangements of furniture.
È bello ricominciare da capo, amare il vecchio e abbracciare il nuovo. Sono abbastanza orgogliosa di me stessa, se non un po’ dolorante con qualche livido. Ho spostato mobili pesanti, e ho costruito tante cose. Ho sbattuto chiodi contro i muri per appendere quadri, ho installato le aste di metallo per le tende, ho costruito tavolini e scaffalature E ho anche montato una porta per i cani nella porta scorrevole, in modo che i cani possano entrare e uscire liberamente.
It feels good to have a fresh start, cherishing the old and embracing the new. I’m pretty proud of myself — if not a little sore with a few bruises. I’ve been moving heavy furniture and have put together so many things. I’ve pounded nails into the walls to hang pictures, installed drapery hardware, built small tables and shelving units AND even mounted a dog door into the sliding patio door so the dogs can go in and out freely.

What moving into a new house has taught me.
È importante prendere tempo per apprezzare I tuoi averi. È anche un’esperienza altamente catartica per liberarti di disordine e cose non essenziali che bloccano la tua energia e la tua produttività. È bello avere “roba” ma è anche necessario eliminare la paglia e mantenere solo le cose che ti danno gioia. Suona familiare? Questa è stata sempre la mia filosofia… ma recentemente l’ho portata a un nuovo livello. Sembra che la “consapevolezza” sia diventata il nuovo trend ed è il nuovo mantra per una generazione che tende a raccogliere troppe cose materiali.
It is so important to take the time to appreciate your possessions. It is also a highly cathartic experience to rid yourself of clutter and unessential things that block your energy and your productivity. It is great to have “stuff” but also necessary to weed out the chaff and keep only the things that bring you joy. Sound familiar? This has always been my philosophy… but recently, I’ve taken it to the next level! It seems “mindfulness” has become the new rage and is the new mantra for a generation that tends to collect way too many material possessions.

Tutto questo ricostruito e declutterare al massimo mi ha dato energia extra. Che vuol dire per il Matta blog? Bene, ho deciso di applicare la stessa “consapevolezza” al Matta blog e darlo un nuovo look. Sto sistemando e riorganizzando, e tra poco mi trasferirò in una “nuova casa.” Nelle prossime settimane, il mio blog di setta anni verrà rinnovato. Presenterò nuovi suggerimenti per l’apprendimento della lingua, viaggi e modi di esercitarvi con me. Ci divertiremo molto!
All this extra-intensive re-constructing and decluttering have given me extra energy. How does it translate to the Matta Blog? Well, I’ve decided to apply the same “mindfulness” to the Matta Blog and give it a fresh new look. I’m freshening up, reorganizing, and “moving in” to a “new home” soon. In the next couple of weeks, my seven-year-old blog will be getting a make-over. I will be introducing new language learning tips, trips, and ways of practicing with me! We are going to have some fun!

Sono lieto che abbia una nuova casa bellissima in compagna. Anch’io sono appena ritornato una settimane fa ma da Milano. Ho frequentato la Scuola Leonardo Da Vinci. Sono ora di livello C1 che ho raggiunto studiare a casa! Non posso vedere l’ora di vedere il tuo nuovo sito!
