Sono veramente in ottima compagnia e oggi vorrei presentarvi un’altra persona con il nome di Melissa che scrive un “dual language blog” che tratta dei viaggi in Italia. Alcuni mesi fa ci siamo incontrate in un gruppo di chat sul Facebook. Mi piace molto l’idea del suo blog e l’ho invitata a condividere la sua storia come mai ha deciso di aprire il suo blog “Where is Melissa.” Nel suo post Melissa parla dei vantaggi e dei sfidi di aprire un Travel Blog e la gioia di seguire i proprio sogni! Are you guys ready! Get this! There are now TWO MELISSA bloggers! I am indeed in a very good blogging company and today I want to introduce you to another Melissa who writes a dual-language blog about traveling in Italy. A couple of months ago we met in a chat group on Facebook. I like the idea of her blog very much and invited her to share her story with the readers of the Matta Blog the reasons why she decided to open her blog “Where is Melissa.” In her guest post, Melissa talks about the advantages and challenges of starting a Travel Blog and the joy of following your own dreams! Finalmente eccomi qui, è un vero piacere essere sul tuo blog e ti ringrazio molto per l’opportunità. Sono una Melissa anch’io. Giornalista, storyteller, travel blogger e…grande sognatrice.
Finally, here I am, it is a real pleasure to be on your blog and I thank you for the opportunity. I’m also Melissa. Journalist, storyteller, travel blogger and… great dreamer.
Proprio quest’ultimo aspetto mi ha portato, poco più di un anno fa, ad aprire il mio blog personale, un blog di viaggi un po’ insolito.
Actually, it is really this last thing, – being a dreamer – that has led me, just a little less than a year ago, to open my personal blog, a blog about unusual travels and trips.
L’idea nasce dalla voglia di raccontare e di scrivere che mi ha sempre caratterizzato fin da piccolissima. Ma nasce anche dall’esigenza di voler scrivere in libertà – lontana dalle rigide regole delle testate giornalistiche – e in prima persona, per me le emozioni sono tutto e non riuscivo a spersonalizzare ciò che scrivevo per poterlo inserire con successo in un giornale.
The idea comes from the idea of wanting to tell and write about something that has always been a part of me since I was very young. But it also comes from the need to write passionately and poetically – far from the rigid constraints of journalism – and describe in my own voice things I couldn’t write about as successful in my dispassionate and structured voice as a travel journalist for a magazine.
Perché si tratta di un blog di viaggi insolito?! Beh, perché è dedicato esclusivamente alla mia regione (la Campania) e all’Italia! E oggi non è una scelta da poco.
What makes my blog about trips and travels so unusual?! Well, because it is dedicated exclusively to my region (Campania) and Italy! And today it is not a recent choice.
Ma che senso ha girare tutto il mondo se poi del nostro paese non conosciamo proprio nulla?! In più mettici che si tratta di un territorio meraviglioso, ricco di storia e di paesaggi sempre diversi da regione in regione…insomma ce ne sono di cose da scrivere!!
But what is the point of going around the world if we do not know anything about our own country?! Plus, given that it is a marvelous area, rich in history, landscapes, and a very diverse region…in short, there is a lot to write about!!
Mi occupo soprattutto di turismo culturale, naturalistico e slow. Mi piace il viaggio lento, a contatto con la natura, magari muovendomi a piedi, in bici o a cavallo. Sono una brava amazzone, sono cresciuta in una scuola di equitazione, mettetemi in sella ad un cavallo e sarò la persona più felice del mondo!
I concentrate mainly on culture and nature and slow travel. I like moving slowly through my native land, moving by foot, a bike or a horse. I am a good rider, and I grew up in a riding school, put me in a saddle on a horse and I will be the happiest person in the worlds
Proprio grazie a questi splendidi animali, nel 2016 mi sono avvicinata al turismo equestre. Ho attraversato il parco nazionale della Majella a cavallo. Cinque giorni in sella, si dormiva tra i boschi, ci si lavava al fiume, un totale di ben 151 km di sentiero! Un’esperienza unica che mi ha cambiata nel profondo.
Thanks to these wonderful animals, in 2016 I got involved in an equestrian vacation. I crossed the Majella National Park on horseback. I spent five days in the saddle…participants slept in the woods, we washed in the river, a total of 151 km of trail riding! It was a unique experience that profoundly changed me.
Ma è un blog insolito anche perché spesso e volentieri sono semplicemente in giro per la Campania, Napoli e dintorni. Non sento sempre il bisogno di preprarare la valigia e partire. Per me la vita è il viaggio ed è così che affronto tutte le mie giornate. Sono in grado di meravigliarmi anche a due passi da casa e non c’è nulla di più bello.
But, my trip blog is unusual also because often quite happily I am simply traveling around Campania, Naples, and the outlying areas. I don’t always feel the need to pack a bag to leave. For me, life is a journey, and this is how I embrace all my days. I am capable of being amazed even just a few steps away from my house and sometimes there is nothing more beautiful!
Questo mi ha permesso di conoscere davvero il territorio, di diventare una local a tutti gli effetti e da qui ho fatto il passo successivo. Premetto che ho sempre lavorato nel settore del turismo (come hostess, come collaboratrice di agenzia di viaggi, come dipendente di strutture turistiche) e questo, insieme alla mia passione per la scoperta, mi ha portato ad intraprendere anche la professione di travel designer. Sempre più spesso mi venivano chiesti itinerari e consigli di viaggio nella mia regione e, da qui, questa naturale evoluzione. Partendo dall’idea del cliente, creo e progetto un itinerario personalizzato e su misura. Qualcosa di unico e di quanto più lontano possibile dai classici pacchetti preconfezionati. Sono una local che suggerisce esperienze da vera local, una consulente pronta a creare il viaggio – e non la vacanza – ad hoc per chi mi trovo di fronte.
This has allowed me to really know the area, to become a local tourist and from here I took my next steps. I preamble this by saying I have always worked in the tourist sector (as a hostess, as a travel agency employee, as an employee of tourist facilities) and this, along with my passion for discovery and learning new things, has led me to also take up the profession of travel designer. More and more I am asked for itineraries and travel tips in my area and, from this evolved my work. I create and plan a personalized tailor-made itinerary. Something unique and much different from the classic pre-packaged tours. I’m a local that suggests authentic experiences, a consultant ready to create an experience – not the typical tour – arranged for the individual before me.
Ovviamente oggi essere una travel blogger è molto più difficile di qualche anno fa. C’è molta più concorrenza, aprono tantissimi blog al giorno ed è necessario trovare la propria nicchia e il proprio stile per emergere. Allo stesso tempo si fa ancora molta fatica ad essere considerati dei professionisti: è un mestiere che in Italia non viene ancora preso sul serio dalle persone, mentre all’estero lavorare grazie a un blog è normalissimo, quasi all’ordine del giorno.
Obviously, today being a travel blogger is much more difficult than a few years ago. There is a lot more competition. Every day new blogs are begun, and you need to find your niche and your own style to emerge. At the same time in Italy, it is still very difficult to be regarded as a professional: it is a job that in Italy is not yet taken seriously, while to those who live abroad this kind of work is considered extremely valuable, and necessary.
Ci vuole passione, dedizione e anche fortuna! Bisogna capire se si è portati davvero, se al pubblico piace il nostro modo di interagire…ma una buona dose di fortuna è necessaria, non prendiamoci in giro!
It takes passion, dedication and a bit of luck! If this venture is going to succeed, people have to like the way I operate, but a great deal of luck is necessary too – I’m not going to fool myself!
Dunque tra tour in giro per l’Italia e giornate lunghissime a spasso per la mia città ed i miei luoghi del cuore, inseguo il mio sogno ogni giorno senza mollare.
So, between my trips around Italy and long days of walking around my city and visiting my favorite places, I pursue my dream every day without giving up.

My advice for all those interested in
the world of blogging?!
Siate voi stessi, studiate tanto e non smettete mai di crederci! Non basta aprire un blog e mettersi a scrivere. Vanno capiti i meccanismi del web, va studiata la concorrenza, bisogna seguire tutti i social network più importanti costantemente, creare un piano editoriale da rispettare rigorosamente, dare vita a contenuti di qualità, reinventarsi continuamente, stare al passo con il mercato e tanto altro. Insomma, è proprio un lavoro come tutti gli altri e per ottenere risultati bisogna perseverare ed essere pazienti. Non credo molto a quelli che “lascio il mio lavoro a tempo indeterminato e apro un blog”! I primi guadagni possono arrivare anche dopo 2/3 anni e quindi ogni scelta va fatta in maniera ponderata.
Be yourself, study a lot and never stop believing in it! It is not enough to open a blog and start writing. The mechanisms of the web must be understood, the competition must be studied, and it is necessary to follow all the important social networks consistently, create an editorial plan to adhere to it, create quality content, continuing to always re-invent yourself, staying in step with the market and trends. In short, it is just a job like all the rest, to get results you have to persevere and be patient. I do not believe much in those who say they are leaving their jobs to start a blog. The first earnings sometimes can only be seen after two or three years. So every choice you make along the way is important.
Per il resto posso dire che si tratta di un lavoro meraviglioso capace di regalare grandi soddisfazioni. In più mi fa sentire libera…e questa è una cosa che nessun stipendio potrà mai comprare!
For the rest, I can say that it is a wonderful job that gives me great satisfaction. Plus I feel freer…and that is something a fixed salary can never buy!
