Are you familiar with Emilio Pucci and his outrageous designs? They are simply fantastic, the penultimate statement in a fashion that catapulted the Italian designer in the 1950s to fame and fortune and the darling of movie actresses and celebs.
Emilio è nato a Firenze in una delle più antiche famiglie nobili e dove avrebbe vissuto e avrebbe lavorato nel Palazzo Pucci nella capitale del Rinascimento per gran parte della sua vita. I modelli della foto in alto sono in realtà in piedi sul tetto della sua casa! Emilio un appassionato sciatore e vinse una borsa di studio per studiare negli Stati Uniti, dove nel 1937 gli è stato conferito la laurea in scienze politiche, così come un dottorato presso l’Università di Firenze, lo stesso anno.
Emilio was from Florence into one of the oldest noble families and where he would live and work in the Pucci Palace in the Renaissance capital for much of his life. The models in the top photo are actually standing on the rooftop of his home! Emilio was a passionate skier and won a scholarship to study in the U.S. wherein 1937 he was awarded his degree in political science, as well as a doctorate degree from the University of Florence the same year.
I primi abiti progettato da Pucci erano per la sua squadra di sci del college e poi nel 1948 i suoi disegni fatti di tessuti elastici sono diventati di gran moda e sono stati fotografati da Bazaar. Incoraggiato da Stanely Marcus, della linea di negozi Neiman Marcus, ha sviluppato una linea di abiti di stampa senza pieghe. Ha aggiunto una boutique a Roma e all’isola di Capri, dove il jet set divenne ben presto affascinato dalla sua moda.
The first clothes Pucci designed were for his college skiing team and later in 1948 his designs using new stretch fabrics became all the rage and were photographed by Bazaar. Encouraged by Stanley Marcus of THE Neiman Marcus store line, he developed a line of wrinkle-free print dresses. He added a boutique in Rome and on the island of Capri where the jet setters soon became fascinated by his fashions.
È diventato il beniamino di leggende come Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren e Jackie Kennedy e poi di icone pop come Madonna. Anche Barbie, la bambola di plastica ha ottenuto la sua propria linea dei vestiti speciale disegnato da Pucci.
He became the darling of such legends as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Jackie Kennedy and later by pop icons like Madonna. Even Barbie the plastic Doll got her own special Pucci line of clothes!
Pucci è diventato popolare per il pubblico di New York, quando gli è stato chiesto nel 1965 di progettare l’abbigliamento per gli assistenti di volo di Braniff. Come la società ha affermato che volevano: “La fine del banale aeroplano” . Infatti, questa espressione non ha senso in italiano…in inglese sì, è un gioco delle parole: “The End of the Plain Plane.” Le sue uniformi comprendevano dolcevita, t-shirt, giacche corte e culottes.
Pucci became popular with the New York crowd when he was asked in 1965 to design the apparel for Braniff’s flight attendants. As the company stated they wanted: “The End of the Plain Plane.” His uniforms comprised turtlenecks, t-shirts, crop jackets, and culottes.
Inoltre ha disegnato il “casco bolla”, un cappuccio di plastica trasparente indossato dalle assistenti di volo tra i terminal per mantenere le loro acconciature perfette, proteggendole dall’esplosione di jet blast.
He also designed the “bubble helmet” a clear plastic hood worn by the flight attendants between terminal buildings to keep their hairdos perfect and protected from the blast of jet blasts.
Lo stile distinto di Pucci si può vedere nelle stampe psichedeliche originali e fantasiose di colori vorticosi. Emilio è morto nel 1992, ma sua figlia Laudomia Pucci a mantenere attuale l’etichetta Pucci e la casa di moda continua ad essere un’entità di successo.
Pucci’s distinct style can be seen in the original psychedelic prints and fanciful swirly colors. Emilio died in 1992, but his daughter Laudomia Pucci continues the Pucci label and the design house continues to be a thriving entity.
Come ho già detto, Marilyn Monroe è stata una grande fan…sentite questa…è stata sepolta in un abito di Pucci! Era elegante fino all’ultimo e portando la moda di Pucci perfino alla tomba! I disegni di Pucci continuano ad essere favolosi e contemporanei come lo sono stati negli anni sessanta!
As I mentioned, Marilyn Monroe was such a fan…get this…she was buried in a Pucci dress. She was stylish to the very end and took Pucci’s fashions to the grave with her! But, the Pucci fashion didn’t die with her there. The Pucci designs continue to be smashingly mod and are still relevant today as they were back in the 1960s!
