Il paradiso delle signore – Season Two: Will Mori Live? That is the question!

Lo scorso settembre la seconda stagione del “Paradiso delle signore” è stata trasmessa in Italia su Rai 1. Essendo una fan della prima stagione (quella trasmessa per la prima volta nel 2015), non vedevo l’ora che iniziasse la seconda stagione. Ormai conosco bene tutti i protagonisti—Teresa, Pietro, Vittorio, ragioniere Galli, Clara Mantovani, Anna, Silvana, Andreina, Quinto ed Elsa per citarne solo alcuni—e non vedevo l’ora di vedere le loro storie nella seconda stagione. In particolare, il piccolo problema della moglie di Pietro, che si è presentata inaspettatamente negli ultimi trenta secondi della stagione 1 per mandare tutto all’aria e allontanare i due innamorati protagonisti

This past fall the second season of Il paradiso delle signore was aired in Italy on Rai1. Being a fan of the first season (that aired for the first time in 2015), I couldn’t wait for the second season to begin. By now I feel like I know all the characters well—Theresa, Pietro, Vittorio, Ragionere Galli, Clara Mantovani, Anna, Silvana and Andreina, Quinto, and Elsa to name just a few—and I was looking forward to resolving their stories in Season II. In particular the sticky little issue of Pietro’s wife who showed up unexpectedly in the last thirty seconds of Season I to upset the apple cart and run a wedge between our two happy-in-love protagonists.

Da quando lo show è terminato nel 2016, ho seguito la social media in attesa di notizie su quando le riprese sarebbero iniziare e quando la seconda stagione sarebbe stata pronta. Potete solo imaginare quanto fossi entusiasta di sapere che sarebbe iniziato mentre ero in Italia due mesi fa. In effetti, è stato possibile vederlo dal vivo sul mio televisore insieme al resto dei fan locali.

 Since the show ended back in 2016, I have been following along on social media waiting for news of when filming would resume again and when the second season would be ready. You can just imagine how thrilled I was to learn that it would begin while I was in Italy two months ago. In fact, I got to watch it live on my television along with the rest of the local fans.

In tutto ci sono venti episodi del Signore delle Paradiso II. È un film storico ambientato nel 1956. Teresa Iorio lascia la Sicilia e si sposta a Milano, dove trova lavoro come una delle Veneri, le commesse del primo grande magazzino d’Italia: il Paradiso delle Signore. La trama intreccia moda, nuove idee di marketing, amore, intrighi e amicizie. Durante il boom del dopoguerra, l’Italia guarda al futuro e Teresa deve adattarsi ai tempi moderni, alla città di Milano e all’evoluzione del ruolo delle donne nella società.

In all, there are twenty episodes of Il Signore delle Paradiso 2. It is a period piece set in 1956. Teresa Iorio leaves Sicily and moves to Milan, where she finds works as one of the Veneri—the shop girls in the first big department store in Italy, specifically Milan—Il Paradiso delle Signore—Paradise for Women. The story weaves together fashion, newfangled marketing ideas, love, intrigue, and friendships. During the post-war boom, Italy looks to the future and Teresa must adapt to modern times, the city of Milan, and the changing role of women in Italian society.

Però le cose non vanno liscio come l’olio—ovviamente—quella di cui stiamo parlando è una fiction italiana! Ci sono triangoli amorosi, rapporti d’affari corrotti ed ex-mogli americane che si presentano per creare problem. La storia è divertente, qualche volta esagerata, però ancora i personaggi sono sorprendetemente ben scritti e mi fanno venire la voglia di tifare per loro nonostante i loro difetti di carattere. Ahem, in particolare Pietro Mori, il proprietario del Paradiso (interpretato da Giuseppe Zeno) Chi non vorrebbe cadere sotto il suo incantesimo, anche se ha un piccolo problema con l’alcol?

But things don’t always go smoothly—of course—this is Italian fiction we are talking about! There are love triangles, corrupt business dealings, and ex-American-wives who show up to cause trouble! The show is campy and over the top, but still, the characters are surprisingly well crafted and make you want to root for them despite their obvious character faults. Ahem, especially Pietro Mori (played by Giuseppe Zeno), the owner of Il Paradiso. Who wouldn’t want to fall under his spell—even if he has a bit of a drinking problem?

Quando ho iniziato a guardare la seconda stagione, ho avuto grandi aspettative. All’inizio a trama non era un gran che, ma dopo un po’ sono diventata più coinvolta. Poi ho raggiunto il finale…che posso dire…non è stato soddisfacente, per niente. Veramente? È così che vogliono lasciare le cose? Chiedendosi ancora una volta sul destino di Teresa e Pietro. Il clamore potrebbe essere sentito da qui a San Francisco, quando i fedeli fan italiani hanno subito iniziato a chiedere a gran voce per una terza stagione per risolvere la domanda senza risposta: Pietro vive o muore tra le braccia di Teresa, la sua fidanzata?

When I started watching season II, I had high expectations. But I began to warm to the plot about halfway through. But then we reached the ending…what can I say…it was less than satisfactory. Really?!? That’s how they want to leave things? Wondering once again as to the fate of Teresa and Pietro. The uproar could be heard all the way here to San Francisco as the loyal Italian fans immediately began clamoring for a Third season to resolve the unanswered question: Does Pietro live or does he die in the arms of his Teresa his fiancé.

Durante il mese di novembre, dopo la chiusura della seconda stagione, è stato molto divertente seguire la pagina dei fan su Facebook e osservare le petizione per convincere la RAI ad impegnarsi in un’altra stagione. La notizia cambia ogni giorno, ma penso che i fan possano rilassarsi perché, a quanto pare, la RAI sa quando ha un successo tra le mani. A quanto pare, la RAI ha confermato che ci sarà la terza stagione del Paradiso delle signore che andrà in onda. Quando? Boh, chissà. Dopo tutto è la TV italiana! Proprio come nello show, non ci sono garanzie e tutto può accadere.

During the month of November, following the close of the second season, it has been somewhat humorous following the fan page on Facebook, and observe as petitions have been created to get RAI to commit to another season. The news seems to shift from day to day, but I think fans can sit back and relax because apparently, RAI knows when it has a hit on its hands. As of this reporting, it seems that RAI has confirmed that there will, in fact, be a Season 3 of Il Paradiso delle Signor which will air. When…well, who knows. It is Italian TV after all! Just like on the show itself, there are no guarantees, and anything can happen.
