Il mese scorso, la domenica prima della mia partenza da Arezzo, sono andata in macchina con la mia amica Debora per visitare alcuni luoghi interessanti fuori la città. Abbiamo trascorso una giornata eccellente girando per le colline toscane alla scoperta di alcuni gioielli e cose degne da vedere. Eccol la mia amica Debora per raccontarvi qualcosa in più sulla nostra gita in campagna.
Last month, the Sunday before I left Arezzo I went on a little with my friend Debora to visit some interesting sites just outside of town. We had an excellent day poking around the Tuscan hills in search of hidden gems and interesting things to see. Here is my friend Deborah to tell you a little more about our Sunday drive.
Ciao!! Sono Debora! Vi torno a parlare di un altro angolo della provincia della mia città, il Valdarno superiore, per la precisine di una strada, la Setteponti, chiamata nel passato Cassia Vetus, un’itinerario tra i più belli da vedere tra Arezzo e Firenze, ricco di storia e di paesaggi unici. È un susseguirsi di curve che si snoda tra oliveti, vigneti e casolari tipici della campagna toscana che ci permette di ammirare pievi romaniche e pittoreschi borghi medioevali.
Hi, I’m Debora! I am back to talk about another little corner of the province where I live, the upper Valdarno, to be precise it is a road that crosses the Setteponti. In the past, it was called Cassia Vetus, and it is one of the most beautiful routes between Arezzo and Florence and it is rich in history and unique landscapes. The road winds through a series of curves that take you through olive groves, vineyards, and farmhouses typical of the Tuscan countryside. Following this road, you can also admire Romanesque churches and picturesque medieval villages.
Lasciando Arezzo passando per Ponte Buriano entriamo nella Setteponti. Il ponte romanico a sette grandi arcate dà il nome alla strada ed è raffigurato da Leonardo da Vinci sullo sfondo della Gioconda.
Leaving Arezzo you enter the area of Setteponti. There you will find the Romanesque bridge with seven large arches that gives its name to the road and which is also portrayed in the background of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa
Da qui inizia il nostro percorso con la visita del Borro, borgo medioevale che ancora oggi mantiene il suo aspetto originario: strade lastricate e un antico ponte che attraversa il fossato e fa entrare nel paese attraverso l’unica stradina di accesso corteggiata dai pittoreschi edifici.
From here begins our journey with a visit to Borro, a medieval village that still maintains its original appearance: paved streets and an ancient bridge that crosses the moat and leads into the village.
Il Borro è legato a due famiglie, prima ai Savoia, residenza del Duca Amedeo d’Aosta e poi dal 1993 della famiglia Ferragamo, grazie al loro intervento è stato oggetto di “restauro” e riqualificazione. La maggioranza delle abitazioni sono diventate appartamenti in stile toscano per turisti provenienti da tutto il mondo.
It is the only road into the small little hamlet and is flanked by picturesque buildings. The Borro is linked to two families, first to the Savoy family, and it was the residence of Duke Amedeo d’Aosta. More recently it is linked to the Ferragamo family who in 1993, thanks to their intervention restored the little town to its current splendor. Most of the houses are now Tuscan-style apartments for tourists who come from all over the world to stay here.
Lasciando il borgo del Borro si prosegue per la Setteponti e si arriva a Gropina dove si trova la pieve romanica di San Pietro del XII sec. una tra le più belle pievi della Toscana dove possiamo ammirare capitelli istoriati, un pulpito del periodo longobardo e dall’esterno la sua raffinata e particolare abside.
After leaving the hamlet of Borro, you can continue on to Gropina where you will find the Romanesque church of San Pietro built in the 12th century. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Tuscany where you can admire the columns and capitals that are decorated with decorative designs from the Bible. There is also a magnificent pulpit from the Longobardo period and you can admire from the outside the shape of the circular apse.

Grazie Debora! È stata davvero una giornata magica. Volevo aggiungere che nella cantina sotterranea della Chiesa di Gropino abbiamo esplorato un po’ è abbiamo scoperto le rovine etrusche.
Thanks Debora! It was truly a magical day. I wanted to add that in the underground chambers of the church in Gropina we got to explore a bit and discovered Etruscan ruins.
Non si sa mai cosa troverete quando verrete con noi. Abbiamo anche mangiato molto bene, più tardi quella sera in un buon ristorante nascosto nella campagna tra Arezzo e Anghieri che solo le persone di Arezzo conoscono.
You never know what you are going to find when you come along with us. We also ate very well, later that evening at a lovely little restaurant tucked along with the background between Arezzo and Anghiari.
