Two Foreigners celebrate the history and culture of Arezzo!

Il mese scorso, quando ero ad Arezzo, mi sono messa in contatto con Fadi Raslan, il titolare della Loren Jewelry e Valentina Moretti, direttrice di marketing dell’azienda. Fadi, che non è originario dell’Italia, ha creato una straordinaria collezione di gioielli chiamata Ellius Jewelry dedicata ad Arezzo e alla Giostra del Saracino. Il nome Ellius si riferisce ad un antico gladiatore romano, e inizialmente, il suo progetto era di realizzare solo una linea di gioielli per la storia dell’antica Roma. Ma grazie alla città di Arezzo, la sua storia, la sua cultura e il suo affascinante festival di Giostra, Fadi, circa due anni fa, ha deciso di creare una nuova linea interamente dedicata ad Arezzo, alla Giostra, i suoi simboli e disegni che caratterizzano la città – come la Chimera – e ciascuno dei quattro quartieri e i loro colori e stemmi.

Last month when I was in Arezzo I made it a point to get in touch with Fadi Raslan, the owner of Loren Jewelry, and Valentina Moretti the company’s marketing director of the company. Fadi who is not originally from Italy has created an extraordinary collection of jewelry called Ellius Jewelry that is dedicated to Arezzo and the Giostra del Saracino. The name Ellius refers to an ancient Roman gladiator, and initially, his concept was to design a line of jewelry to the history of ancient Rome. But, thanks to the city of Arezzo, its history and culture, and its fascinating Jousting festival Fadi, about two years ago, decided to create a new line dedicated entirely to Arezzo, the Joust, its symbols, and designs that feature each of the four neighborhoods and their unique colors and coat of arms.

Mi sono accorta della linea Ellius circa un anno fa quando ero ad Arezzo con il mio secondo Gruppo linguistico. Potresti ricordare un post precedente che ho scritto su Ellius Jewelry. Quando ho visto per la prima volta una serie di ciondoli dedicati alla Giostra di Arezzo nel palazzo comunale della città, sono rimasta incantata. Ho fatto alcuni acquisti, e poi più tardi quando sono tornata a casa, dopo aver pubblicato il mio secondo libro, “Waking Isabella” ambientato ad Arezzo ho contattato Valentina per la prima volta – la rappresentante di marketing dell’azienda – via Internet per acquistare alcuni regali per la mia editrice per ringraziarla per il lavoro che ha fatto per me.

I became aware of the Ellius line a year or so ago when I was in Arezzo with my second language group. You may remember a previous post I wrote about Ellius Jewelry. When I first saw a set of pendants dedicated to Arezzo’s Joust in the City’s Municipal building I was immediately enchanted. I made a few purchases at the time, and when I returned home, after publishing my second book “Waking Isabella” set in Arezzo, I contacted Valentina, the company’s marketing representative via the internet to purchase a few gifts for my editor to thank her for the work she had done for me.

Quando sono tornata ad Arezzo lo scorso giugno, ho contatto Valentina di nuovo per chiederle se fosse possibile visitare la sede della Loren Jewelry per incontrare lei e Fadi di persona. Era un po’ spontanea, e l’ho chiamata mentre stavo pranzando alla Fomaggeria Biancolatte. Ha risposto la sua segreteria telefonica e le ho lasciato un messaggio in italiano. In realtà non ero sicura che si sarebbe ricordata di me, o che tipo di accoglienza avrei avuto. Ma non avrei mai dovuto preoccuparmi. Dopo qualche minuto, mi ha chiamato subito e mi ha risposto calorosamente “Certo che mi ricordo di te! Sarebbe un vero piacere per me e Fadi se ci facessi una visita.” Infatti, mi ha detto, a sentire le nostre voci sembrava che fossimo già grandi amiche.

When I returned to Arezzo this past June, I reached out Valentina again to see if I could visit the headquarters of Loren Jewelry and meet both her and Fadi in person. It was a bit spur of the moment, and I called Valentina while lunching at Formaggeria Biancolatte. I reached her voice mail and left her a voicemail in Italian. Actually, I wasn’t sure if she would remember me, or what kind of reception I would have. But, I should never have worried. After a few moments, she rang me right back and warmly said “Of course I remember you and both she and Fadi would be delighted for me to come by. In fact, she said, hearing my voice it seemed we were already great friends.”

Ero felice e con le mie amiche siamo andate subito in periferia dove si trova la fabbrica di Loren Jewelry. Dopo aver attraversato le porte di sicurezza, abbiamo fatto un tour della struttura, abbiamo incontrato molti artigiani e designer di Fadi e abbiamo avuto la possibilità di osservare come loro realizzano i gioielli. Abbiamo anche dato una sbirciata ad alcuni dei loro nuovi disegni che usciranno quest’autunno.

I was thrilled and with my friends we drove to the outskirts of Arezzo where the Loren Jewelry operations are located. After being buzzed in through the security doors, we got a tour of the facilities, met several of Fadi’s artisans and designers and had the chance to observe how they make their jewelry. We also got a sneak peek at some of their new unreleased designs coming out later this fall.

Ma soprattutto, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di chiacchierare per un po’ con Fadi e Valentina, e quando me ne sono andata, mi sembrava di aver consolidato un’amicizia molto speciale. Abbiamo persino scherzato sul fatto che ci sono voluti due stranieri per onorare Arezzo e le cose meravigliose che ha da offrire…Fadi con i suoi gioielli e io con il mio libro che si svolge ad Arezzo, sullo sfondo della giostra, la fiera antiquaria e la tradizione di orafo di Arezzo.

But most special of all, we had the chance to chat for a while with both Fadi and Valentina, and when I left, I felt like we had solidified a special kind of friendship. We even joked that it took two foreigners to celebrate Arezzo and the wonderful things she has to offer…Fadi with his jewelry designs and me with my book that takes place in Arezzo, set against the backdrop of the joust, the city’s antique fair, and gold jewelry trade.

Noi stranieri – che ci siamo innamorati di Arezzo – ci sosteniamo a vicenda. I gioielli disegnati da Fadi con i simboli di Arezzo sono bellissimi e mi fanno pensare a una città speciale e a tutti gli amici che ci vivono! Indosso gli anelli e ciondoli quasi ogni giorno.

We foreigners who have fallen in love with Arezzo support one another! The jewelry designed by Fadi with the symbols of Arezzo is beautiful and makes me think of a special city and all the friends who live there! I wear the rings and necklaces almost every day.

E pochi giorni dopo il nostro incontro, mi ha fatto molto piacere che sia Fadi che Valentina siano venuti alla presentazione che ho dato del mio libro “Waking Isabella” nella Biblioteca di Arezzo, molto vicino alla Piazza Grande. Davvero mi ha reso quel giorno memorabile! Grazie Valentina e Fadi! Viva Arezzo!

And a few days after our meeting, it pleased me very much that both Fadi and Valentina came to the presentation I gave about my book “Waking Isabella” in Arezzo’s Biblioteca just off the Piazza Grande. It made my day! Thank you, Valentina and Fadi! Viva Arezzo!
