Ho appena concluso il 4 ° “Matta” programma di immersione con Cultura Italiana qui ad Arezzo. Ancora una volta, ho avuto il piacere di trascorrere del tempo in una delle mie città preferite con un gruppo di studenti di Australia, California, Kansas City, Connecticut e Tennessee,

I have just finished up the 4^th Matta and Cultura Italiana Italian Language Program here in Arezzo. Once again, I had the pleasure of spending time in one of my favorite cities with a group of language learners from Australia, California, Kansas City, Connecticut, and Tennessee.

Ancora una volta, il programma era
strapieno di attività, sorprese e molte risate.

Once again, the program was packed with lots
of activities, surprises, and lots of laughter.

Insieme abbiamo preso i pennelli per imparare fare affreschi come il maestro pittore Michelangelo, dallo chef Lala abbiamo messo le mani nell’impasto e abbiamo creato le tagliatelle a mano. Abbiamo bevuto numerosi spritz e calici di vino e ci siamo concessi grandi fette di pizza, piatti di pasta e piadine calde.

Together we picked up brushes learned how to paint a fresco like the master painter Michelangelo, from chef Lala we got our hands into pasta dough and created tagliatelle a mano. We drank numerous spritzs and glasses of wine and we indulged in big slices of pizza, plates of pasta and hot piadine.

Presso la scuola Cultura Italiana di Paola Testi abbiamo frequentato corsi di Italiano con segnanti fantastici come Monica, Gianmarco, Paola e Laura—con altri studenti da tutto il mondo. Abbiamo imparato nuove parole e frasi come “stuzzicadenti,” “cavarsela,” e “bello come il sole” e “fresca come una rosa”!

At Paola Testi’s school Cultura Italiana we attended classes with fantastic teachers—Monica, Gianmarco, Paola, Roberto e Laura with other students from around the globe. We learned words and phrases like “stuzzicadenti,” “cavarsela,” and “bello come il sole” as well as “fresca come una rosa!”

Abbiamo fatto escursioni ad alcune città vicino ad Arezzo come Orvieto e Chuisi alla ricerca di tombe etrusche e siamo entrati nelle chiese importanti di Arezzo guidate da Debora Bresciani per scoprire i gioielli della città: il crocifisso di Cimabue e gli affreschi dipinti da Piero della Francesca. Abbiamo anche fatto una chiacchierata con Signor Conti, l’artista che scolpisce dal legno il premio regalato ai vincitori della giostra.

We visited cities nearby to Arezzo—Orvieto and Chuisi—in search of Etruscan tombs and visited inside some of Arezzo’s important churches guided by Debora Bresciani to discover the jewels of the town; the crucifix by Cimabue and the frescos painted by Piero della Francesca. We also popped in for a chat with Signor Conti, Arezzo’s lance maker to see how he sculpts out of wood the prize given to the winners of the joust.

Per me come sempre, è il mio piacere presentare i miei studenti alla Giostra Saracino di Arezzo. Sì! Ammetto di essere molto appassionata della Giostra. Per me è un piacere far conoscere questo evento agli altri.

For me as always, it is my extreme pleasure to introduce my participants to Arezzo’s Giostra Saracino. YES! I admit I’m a groupie of the joust and it is a pleasure opening up others to this experience.

Bisogna semplicemente “vivere” quest’esperienze per apprezzare in tutti i sensi la storia e l’orgoglio che gli Aretini hanno per questo evento che occorre due volte ad anno a giugno e a settembre. Che divertimento sederci tutti insieme nella Tribuna di Piazza Grande per vedere i giostratori dei quartieri mentre prendono i loro turi correndo attraverso la lizza cercando di colpire un bersaglio delle dimensioni di una moneta per guadagnare punti per il loro quartiere.

One simply has to “live” this experience to fully appreciate the sense of history and the pride the Aretini take in this event that occurs twice a year in June and September. What fun to sit in the bleachers in Piazza Grande and watch as the neighborhood jousters take their turn dashing across the lizza trying to hit a target the size of a quarter to earn points for their quartiere.

Ancora più divertente, unirci alla gente del quartiere Santo Spirito la sera prima per cantare e ballare e tifare per i giostratori. Un Ringraziamento speciale a Roberto Turchi per aver aperto il museo di Santo Spirito per farci entrare per vedere le lance che i giostratori per gialloblu ha vinto nel corso degli anni.

Even more fun, taking part in the neighborhood party the evening before to sing and dance and cheer on the neighborhood teams. Special thanks to Roberto Turchi for opening up the Santo Spirito museum and inviting my group to see the prize lances—le lance d’oro—that have been gialloblu jousters have won over the years.

Abbiamo concluso il nostro tempo insieme con una serata indimenticabile trascorsa con i miei amici italiani che hanno aperto la loro casa al mio gruppo di lingua italiana la nostra ultima sera insieme. C’era molto amore, risate e gioia: questo è l’Italia! Questo è il motivo per cui impariamo l’italiano. Questo è il motivo per cui continuiamo a tornare in Italia! QUESTA È L’ITALIA!

We wrapped up our time together with an unforgettable evening spent with my Italian friends who opened up their home to my Italian language group on our last evening together. There was lots of love and laughter and joy—this is what Italy is all about! This is why we learn Italian. This is why we keep returning to Italy! THIS IS ITALY!
