Con piacere, vi presento la traduzione di “Il Risveglio di Isabella,” già pubblicato in inglese nel 2017 col titolo “Waking Isabella.” Sono l’autrice di altri due libri scritti in inglese e ambientati in Italia, “Dreaming Sophia” e “Eternally Artemisia.”

With pleasure, I present to you the Italian translation of “Il Risveglio di Isabella,” that was published in English in 2017 with the title “Waking Isabella.” I am the author of two other books written in English set in Italy, “Dreaming Sophia” and newly published “Eternally Artemisia.”

Ho ambientato “Il Risveglio di Isabella” ad Arezzo, perché mi sento a casa lì e perché volevo presentare agli stranieri la bellezza, la storia, e la giostra—una festa che in questa città affascinante, è vissuta in modo molto particolare. Quando parlo della giostra con persone di altre città d’Italia mi rendo conto che persino alcuni Italiani potrebbero imparare qualcosa di più su questo evento. Essendo americana, la storia è scritta dal punto di vista di una straniera, e include elementi che ho imparato durante i miei soggiorni lì. La storia è fiction, quindi tutti i personaggi sono inventati, ma i dettagli della vita di Isabella de’ Medici, i santi, i luoghi, e le leggende sono veri.

I set “Il Risveglio di Isabella” in the town of Arezzo, because I feel at home there and because I wanted to share with others the beauty, the history and the joust—a festival that is particular to this charming town. When I speak about Arezzo’s joust with other Italians who live in other towns, I realized that there are even some Italians who could also learn more about this event. Being American, the story is written from the point of view of a foreigner, and it includes what I have discovered during my long stays in Arezzo. The story is fiction and all the characters are invented, but the details of Isabella de’ Medici, the saints, the places and the legends are all very real!

Dopo la sua pubblicazione in inglese ho ricevuto molte richieste dalle persone che seguono il mio dual language blog e dagli amici Italiani—soprattutto gli aretini—che il libro venisse tradotto in italiano. Pensavo che oltre ad essere un omaggio ad Arezzo, sarebbe stato un altro modo di migliorare la mia conoscenza della lingua. Sicuramente nel corso della traduzione di “Il Risveglio di Isabella,” ho imparato tante cose! Prima di tutto mi sono resa conto che fare una traduzione è come realizzare un’opera d’arte e qualche volta è difficile colmare il divario tra le due lingue. Dato che non sono una traduttrice professionista mi sono affidata all’esperienza di diversi consulenti italiani; alla fine, quindi la traduzione non è soltanto il frutto d’amore di questa studentessa matta ma, di un’intera squadra di madrelingua.

After publishing the novel in English, I received many requests from people who follow the Matta blog as well as from my Italian friends—foremost the people who live in Arezzo—who wanted to see the book translated into Italian. I thought it would be a lovely tribute to Arezzo and would be another way for me to deepen my understanding of the language. Certainly, during the course of translating “Il Risveglio di Isabella,” I learned many things! First of all, I realized the translation work is an art form and sometimes it is difficult to bridge the language gap between the two languages. Given that I’m not a professional translator I relied on the experience of many Italian language consultants: in the end, the translation is a labor of love made by this crazy language student, along with my Italian team of native Italian teachers.

La mia protagonista Leonora direbbe se ci si ferma
e ci si guarda intorno, si scopre la bellezza
nelle sue diverse forme, prima fra
tutte la generosità degli amici.

My protagonist Leonora would say the if we stop and look around us, we will discover beauty in various forms—and one of those forms is the generosity of friends.
