In un guest post di Renata, si presenta. Spiega la sua filosofia di insegnamento e perché apre la sua casa agli studenti di lingua italiana a Milano.
In a guest post by Renata, she introduces herself. She explains her teaching philosophy and why she opens her home to students of the Italian language in Milan.

“To know a second language is to possess a second soul,” said Charlemagne…
Imparare una lingua straniera, aggiungo io, non significa solo sapere le regole della grammatica, della pronuncia e dell’ortografia. Significa anche abbracciare la cultura del popolo che la parla, conoscerne il paese. Significa affrontare un viaggio che non ha mai fine e grazie al quale ci si ritrova più arricchiti.
Learning a foreign language, I would add, does not only mean knowing the rules of grammar, pronunciation, and spelling. It also means embracing the culture of the people who speak it and getting to know their country. It means embarking on a never-ending journey and finding oneself more enriched.
Mentre studiavo all’università Lingue e Letterature Straniere mi sono resa conto che lo studio della grammatica non era sufficiente per imparare. Così mi sono trasferita prima un anno in Francia e in seguito in Spagna. Mi sono immersa nella cultura francese, studiando contemporaneamente la teoria ma mettendo in pratica ciò che avevo imparato conversando con francesi, vivendo con loro, scambiando idee, vivendo esperienze, leggendo, studiando la storia del paese, viaggiando, ascoltando. Ho proseguito con lo stesso metodo imparando la lingua spagnola.
While studying Foreign Languages and Literature at the University, I realized that studying grammar was not enough to learn. So I moved first a year to France and later to Spain. I immersed myself in French culture, simultaneously studying theory but putting into practice what I had learned by conversing with French people, living with them, exchanging ideas, experiencing things, reading, studying the country’s history, traveling, and listening. I continued with the same method by learning the Spanish language.
Dopo la laurea ho iniziato ad insegnare francese nei licei e ad tenere lezioni private a casa. Lo spirito è stato sempre quello di approcciare la lingua straniera non solo dal punto di vista teorico ma anche e soprattutto culturale e umano.
After graduation, I began teaching French in high schools and giving private lessons at home. The spirit was always to approach the foreign language not only from a theoretical point of view but also and above all, from a cultural and human point of view.
Quando i miei figli erano ancora piccoli ho fatto amicizia con una mamma inglese, appena arrivata in Italia con la sua famiglia, che mi ha chiesto di aiutarla ad imparare l’italiano, questa lingua tanto difficile. Lei è stata la mia prima allieva e con lei mi sono rivista qualche anno prima nella sua stessa situazione: ero satura di teoria, di lingua insegnata sui libri ma non capivo e non riuscivo ad esprimermi. Capivo perfettamente il suo smarrimento. Ringrazio ancora questa ragazza, adesso amica, perché mi ha permesso di comprendere che trasmettere ad altri la lingua e la cultura del mio paese è la mia passione. Così ho deciso di specializzarmi nell’insegnamento della lingua italiana agli stranieri.
When my children were still young, I befriended an English mother who had just arrived in Italy with her family and asked me to help her learn Italian, this challenging language. She was my first student, and with her, I saw myself a few years earlier in the same situation as her: I was saturated with theory, with language taught in books, but I did not understand and could not express myself. I fully understood her bewilderment. I still thank this girl, now a friend, because she allowed me to realize that transmitting the language and culture of my country to others is my passion. So I decided to specialize in teaching Italian to foreigners.
Con i miei corsi propongo una completa immersione nella lingua e nella cultura italiana, abbinando allo studio della grammatica una serie di esperienze positive e stimolando lo studente a “buttarsi” senza timore di sbagliare. L’ambiente amichevole e familiare rende più leggero e gradevole l’apprendimento e lo arricchisce di ricordi.
With my courses, I offer a complete immersion in the Italian language and culture, combining the study of grammar with a series of positive experiences and stimulating the student to “jump in” without fear of making mistakes. The friendly and familiar environment makes learning lighter and more enjoyable and enriches it with memories.
P.S. In questi trent’anni non ho mai abbandonato la lingua francese, mio “primo amore” e mia seconda anima. Leggo almeno una volta al mese un libro in francese, guardo film in lingua originale e appena posso “scappo” in Francia dai miei vecchi amici, la mia seconda famiglia!!
P.S. In these 30 years, I have never abandoned the French language, my “first love” and my second soul. I read at least once a month a book in French, watch movies in the original language, and as soon as I can “escape” to France to my old friends, my second family!!!
