  1. Very useful to have prepositions in these sets and serve them to us in small manageable doses! And with examples of how they are used in context, it makes them much easier to remember. Thank you.

  2. Thank you for the preposition sets! One thing I find confusing is the use of “di” versus “d'” before a word beginning with a vowel. Are there rules, or can one choose whichever seems to sound better?

    1. Ciao Ethan, before a word beginning with a vowel in Italian you drop the vowel either with the preposition or with the definite article (Il, la = the) or the indefinite article (una = an).

For example: instead of “la arancia” you write “l’arancia” (“le arance” plural you don’t drop the “e”)

The same with preposizioni: Il succo d’arancia. (you drop the vowel of the preposizione “di” and run the two words together using an apostrophe to indicate the dropped vowel.

When pronouncing words with apostrophes “d’arancia”, “nell’America”, “all’estero”, your pronounce as one word, ryou don’t hesitate or pause. but instead run the sounds together as if the words were darancia, allestero, nellamerica,

      Tutto chiara? Fammi sapere!

      1. Grazie! Però a volte si vede “di” con una vocale. Alcuni esempi da Babbel: “l’esame di ammissione”; “Oggi sto meglio di ieri”; “Te ne intendi di arte contemporanea”. In questi casi “d'” sarebbe un errore? E anche si usa sempre “di” con “un” o “una”? Esempi ancora da Babbel – “Abbiamo bisogno di un pizzico di sale e di una confezione di farina.”

        1. Ciao! Articulated prepositions have the same function of simple preposition, though it is not always easy for learners of Italian to understand when to use them. The problem is That it is not possible to establish a rule when to use them… but some patterns can be noticed:

Most articulated prepositions are used when the noun that follows is in the plural form and/or the. It is definite, and not generic.

Never use articulated prepositions before the name of a city
Use in front of a region
          Never in front of surnames

Use apostrophe in front of words that begin with vowel as in these cases:

          D’altra parte
          D’oro

The articulated preposition with words that begin with vowels is generally used to facilitate “la pronuncia”

I asked an Italian friend today and she said technically it is not wrong to articulate d’un pizzico. It stands… so the examples you provide could be articulated… but usually they aren’t – I know so helpful right??!??!?

As with learning how to use Italian prepositions you have to memorise or become familiar with when and how to articulate them.

  3. Sospettavo che fosse complicato! Grazie mille per la spiegazione, e per esserti preso la briga [?] di chiesto a tua amica!
