Durante un recente soggiorno ad Arezzo, ho avuto la grande fortuna di incontrare e fare amicizia con Laura Ghezzi. È un’artista appassionata di insegnare l’antica tecnica dell’affresco e anche della pittura ad acquerello. È una persona fantastica e solare con un’immaginazione meravigliosa. Dopo esserci incontrate lo scorso settembre, subito l’ho trovata simpatica e disponibile e stiamo preparando alcune attività interessanti per il prossimo “Matta Program” ad Arezzo nel giugno 2019. Insieme offriremo un seminario d’arte—come si fa gli affreschi! Sembra giusto no, visto che Arezzo ha alcuni degli affreschi più importanti di Piero della Francesca!
During a recent trip to Arezzo, I had the great fortune to meet and become friends with Laura Ghezzi. She is an artist who is passionate about teaching the ancient technique of fresco as well as that of watercolor painting. She is a delightful, bubbly individual with a fantastic imagination. Infact, together we are now cooking up some interesting activities for the next Matta Program in Arezzo in June 2019. We will be offering a seminar on the art of Fresco painting! It seems appropriate since Arezzo is the home of Piero della Francesca, no?

Sapevate che la pittura a fresco è una delle più antiche tecniche artistiche italiane, solitamente associata a quadri grandi sui muri. È un’abilità che risale all’antichità classica, ma ha raggiunto il suo apice come forma d’arte durante il Rinascimento italiano. Basta pensare alla Cappella Sistina di Michelangelo e alle sue magnifiche figure colorate che decorano il soffitto del Vaticano. Oppure, penate all’opera di Piero nella chiesa di San Francesco ad Arezzo—il Ciclo della Vera Croce—che avremo anche la possibilità d vedere da vicino e personale con la nostra guida privata che ci spiegherà l’intera storia.
Did you know that fresco painting is one of the oldest Italian artistic techniques, usually associated with large-scale murals? It is a skill that dates back to Classical Antiquity but reached its peak as an art form during the Italian Renaissance. Just think of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and his magnificent colorful figures that decorate the ceiling in the Vatican. Or, think of Piero’s work in the church of San Francesco in Arezzo—the Cycle of the True Cross—which we will also have a chance to see up close and personal with our own private guide who will explain the entire story to us.

What exactly is fresco painting?
Cos’è esattamente la pittura fresca? Ci sono due tipi di pittura fresca—asciutta e bagnata. “Fresco Secco” è meno permanente perché i pigmenti vengono miscelati con un legante a tempera e applicati direttamente sull’intonaco asciutto. I suoi colori sono immediatamente più brillanti, ma sono meno resistente in quanto tende a staccarsi dall’intonaco, spesso nella vita dell’artista. Il secondo tipo di affresco è chiamato “Buon Fresco,” ed è il metodo più permanente di affresco. Usando questa tecnica, l’artista applica pigmenti colorati miscelati con acqua su un sottile strato di intonaco bagnato. Mentre il muro asciuga il pigmento chimicamente crea un legame con l’intonaco per creare un’immagine durevole che sopravvive secoli. What is Fresco painting exactly? Well, there are two kinds of fresco painting—dry and wet. Fresco Secco is less permanent because pigments are mixed with a tempera-type binder and applied directly onto dry plaster. Its colors are immediately more brilliant, but it is less durable as it tends to flake off the plaster, often within the artist’s lifetime. The second type of fresco painting is known as Buon Fresco, and it is the most permanent method of fresco painting. Using this technique, the artist applies color pigment mixed with water onto a thin layer of wet plaster call Intonaco. As the wall dries the pigment bonds chemically with the plaster to create a durable image that lasts for centuries. Each day an area of intonaco called “Giornata” is applied to a section of the wall, which the artist must paint before it dries.
Nel laboratorio di Laura, in via del Corso, nel centro storico di Arezzo, trascorremo un pomeriggio dopo le lezioni di lingua, apprenderemo l’arte magica della pittura “Buon Fresco.“ Ogni partecipante imparerà come applicare l’intonaco bagnato e dipingere un disegno a sua scelta su una tavoletta da portare a casa con sé.
In Laura’s studio just of via del Corso in the historic city center of Arezzo, we will spend an afternoon after language lessons learning the magical art of “Buon Fresco”—wet fresco painting. Each participant will learn how to apply wet plaster and paint a design of their choice onto a small board that they can take home with them.
Penso vi piacerà conoscere Laura. È un’artista di talento e a le piace condividere la sua passione con gli altri. Lei trova il restauro affascinante. Dice che è come sbucciare una cipolla. Sotto la superficie della “street art” ci sono strati e strati delle immagini precedenti. Diventa una caccia al tesoro e può rivelare e portare alla luce nuove verità. Come una macchina del tempo, persino fino alle caverne, si può scoprire di più sulla cultura umana, la storia e le norme sociali.
I think you will enjoy meeting Laura. She is a talented artist and loves to share her passion with others. She finds restoration fascinating. She says: In some ways, it is like peeling an onion. Under the surface of street art are layers and layers of previous murals. It becomes a treasure hunt and can reveal and bring to light new truths. Like a time machine, going all the way back to caves even, one can discover more about human culture, history, and societal norms.
Laura dice: mi piace molto condividere la mia passione con gli altri, specialmente con persone che vengono da paesi lontani, perché amo viaggiare. Perché sono un restauratore e dopo tutti questi anni di restauro di opere d’arte fatte da altri, ho riconosciuto la necessità di insegnare questa bellissima e antica tecnica che è così importante per la cultura e la storia italiana per gli altri.
Laura says: I really like sharing my passion with others, especially with people coming from faraway places, because I love traveling. Because I am a restorer and after all these years of restoring works of art made by others, I recognized the need to teach this beautiful and ancient technique that is so important to Italian culture and history to others.
The Atam Wall Painting Project in Arezzo
L’anno prossimo Laura sta per intraprendere un nuovo progetto con Atam (compagnia di trasporti) in un nuovo progetto chiamato “Walls Tell All.” Insieme ad altri sta progettando un affresco multi-materiale all’ingresso del parcheggio di Baldaccio che celebrerà la storia di Arezzo dal tempo degli Etruschi fino a Piero della Francesca, Vasari e i più famosi monumenti e chiese di Arezzo. Intende anche usare la mia illustrazione—quello di Piazza Grande! Sono molto onorata! Sono molto fiera di fare una piccola parte di questo progetto!
Next year Laura is about to embark on a new project with Atam (transport company) on a new project called “Walls Tell All.” She along with others are planning a multi-material fresco at the entrance of Baldaccio Parking lot that will celebrate Arezzo’s history from the time of the Etruscans up to Piero della Francesca, Vasari, and Arezzo’s most famous monuments and churches. She also intends to use some of my own original illustration—that of Arezzo’s Piazza Grande! I’m very honored to play a small role in this mural!
