How to use automated TrenItalia machine to buy train ticket— YouTube Video

Avete mai provato a comprare un biglietto del treno per andare in Italia? A volte può essere un’esperienza un po’ scoraggiante e intimidatoria se non siete abituati a farlo. Ma se si conosce un po’ del sistema ferroviario italiano non è così difficile. Sono qui per sfatare il mistero che circonda l’acquisto di un biglietto del treno.

Have you ever tried to buy a train ticket in Italy? Sometimes it can be a disheartening and intimidating experience if you aren’t used to the process. But, if you know a little about the Italian train system it isn’t so bad. I’m here to dispel some of the mystery surrounding the purchasing of a train ticket.

Prima dovreste sapere che ci sono diversi modi per acquistare i biglietti per viaggiare in treno. Potete andare alla stazione ferroviaria per comprarli direttamente da una persona vera, che vende i biglietti dietro un finestrino di vetro. Se scegliete questa opzione per acquistare i biglietti, avete la comodità di parlare con una persona “reale” ed è possibile praticare il vostro “italiano”….e la persona dietro la finestra può rispondere a tutte le vostre domande riguardo! Però, basta ricordare che in Italia a volte le file per acquistare i biglietti presso la biglietteria potrebbero essere piuttosto lunghe…qualche volta potreste correre il rischio di perdere il treno!

First, you should know that there are several ways to buy a train ticket in Italy. You can go to the rail station to buy them, directly from a real person who sells tickets from behind a glass window. If you choose this option to buy your ticket you have the comfort of talking to a “real” person, you can practice your language skills and the person behind the window can answer all your travel questions! Just remember, however, that in Italia the lines to buy tickets at the ticket window can be quite long and sometimes you run the risk of missing your train!

Fortunatamente per i passeggeri che arrivano di fretta c’è un altro modo più veloce per comprare un biglietto del treno – Il bigliettaio automatico Queste macchine sono multilingue, sono abbastanza facili da usare…e si può pagare i biglietti con le banconote, con le monete o con una carta di credito. Iniziate scegliendo la lingua, toccando un’icona nella prima schermata. Poi continuate a cliccare attraverso gli schermi sulla biglietteria automatica. Scegliete la destinazione, la stazione di partenza, la data, l’ora…i tempi sono basati su un orologio di 24 ore. Scegliete il numero di passeggeri, e puoi il modo con cui volete pagare per i biglietti.

Fortunately for us, there is another way to buy a train ticket that is faster. These machines are multilingual, they’re fairly easy to use, and you can pay for your ticket with banknotes, coins, or a credit card. You begin by selecting a language by tapping an icon on the opening screen. Then you continue on clicking through the screens on the automatic ticket machine. Select destination, departure station, the date, the time….times are based on a 24-hour clock. Select the number of passengers and the way you want to pay for tickets.

Ricordate che “Biglietto solo andata” significa “One-way ticket”. Se volete un biglietto di ritorno cliccate su “andata e ritorno”. Dopo aver elaborato il pagamento, l’apparecchio stamperà il biglietto. Ta da! Siete pronti di partire in treno.

Remember that “one-way ticket” means “one way”. If you want a return ticket click on “round trip”. After your payment is processed, the machine will print your ticket. Ta da! You are ready to travel!

Grazie Anna! Adesso tutti noi siamo pronti di salire a bordo un treno italiano. Ma… Attenzione! Prima di salire sul treno ricordatevi di convalidare il vostro biglietto. Ci sono le macchine gialle sul binario per fare questo. Mettete il biglietto dentro la macchina e attendete per il suono: “tonfo” per essere sicuri che il biglietto è stato stampato. Non dimenticate questo passaggio! Se il macchinista del treno vede che il biglietto non è timbrato, potete ricevere una multa pesante. 

Thanks Anna! Now we are ready to climb onboard an Italian train. But…beware! Before boarding the train always remember to validate your ticket. There are yellow machines on the train platforms to do this. Put your ticket into the machine and wait for a “clunk” sound to be sure that the ticket was printed. Don’t forget this step! If the train conductor sees that your ticket isn’t stamped, you may be charged a hefty fine.
